    Lesson learned...

Thought I'd take advantage of the brief heat wave and rainy forecast to give my new HG tarp a proper test. Tarp worked great, but I woke up around 5AM to discover a 6" deep pond forming underneath, a damp UQ, and my boots floating away. Whoops!

These are the *before* pics. My drenched socks and I were in no mood this morning to take any *after* shots.

I haven't been so low that my UQ has been wet but I've certainly had boots and other items carried away. Sometimes a hill or valley is just so appealing to hang in right? Suspension a little lower on the trees and with a valley your hammock is just the perfect height. Just to nestle into the dip without thinking about where water will go. I often forget about water pooling since abandoning tents!

Good reminder to all. The 3 rules of hammock placement are like real estate:

    Sorry this happened to you.

I never think about water accumulating under the hammock. This is a good reminder. From your pictures the site doesn't seem like an obvious pond-forming area. Aside from the obvious valley shape, are there clues to predict if a site is likely accumulate water?

Been there done that and found my Tyvek ground cover floating and that thing is a mess when soaked with water and covered in mud. I hated to pack it in my pack. the though even crossed my mind to throw it away so as to no get all that mud on my mesh of the pack. As long as you stayed warm is the most important part.

I usually give a cursory look at the terrain before setting up, precisely to avoid this sort of thing. I certainly didn’t pick up on any obvious red flags—site was dry when I got there, was close to the apex of a hill, and the rain that fell while I was awake didn’t seem to be gathering under my tarp at all. Just my luck I picked the night western PA was bombarded with historic flooding!

The area I hung in was actually intended for a tent, lol. I can’t even imagine. As it was, everything but my boots and UQ stayed high and dry.

No lasting harm done. Despite my initial fears, the water appeared mostly to bead up on the outer fabric surface. I shook off as much as I could before stuffing it loosely into the bottom of my pack (separate from my still dry TQ). Brought it straight home and ran it through 2 short drying cycles on low with tennis balls, and it appears good as new.

Me too, honestly. I was royally peeved for about 30 seconds, but humor won out in the end. Kept reminding myself that anger is misspent energy.

I haven't had it happen to me yet but it's certainly a concern. I pile my stuff on tyvek underneath my hammock. If it's raining or rain is expected I roll the tyvek over the top just in case.
