NY>Letchworth State Park/FLT>1.18-1.20 - 2 Night Letchworth Park Winter Through Hike!!

Howdy WNY Hammock Folks. Anyone up for a nice long and enjoyable winter adventure? I will be hiking the length of Letchworth State Park. If you are interested in coming along let me know and we can line up details/meetups. The trip details are below, it is easily piecemealed if you only want to do 1 night or one leg...

    Trip total: 2 nights - 18mi

    Thursday 1/18 (sunset 4:56pm)
    - 2pm depart from Hogsback Overlook Parking Lot (42.721881, -77.912118)
    - Hike 4.5 Miles South to the Powerline Shelter Where we will camp for the night
    - This shelter has a closer access point here or here if anyone wants to portion off their trip.

    Friday 1/19 (sunrise 7:15am | sunset 4:58pm)
    - Hike 9 miles to the G-Shelter for night #2.
    - This shelter also has closeby road access here for any who wish to portion off their trip.
    - This shelter also is by permit only, I will be obtaining said permit if folks want to use the shelter and getting approval to camp in the area of the shelter (for us hammocker's who don't need no stinking lean-to's)

    Saturday 1/20 (sunrise 7:15am)
    - Hike about 4 miles out to River Rd here. Arriving at our vehicles by no later than 11:30am

I go to these lean to's quite a bit and when making permit reservations they tell me you need to stay in the lean to. No hammocks, no tents. I have never had anyone check up on me but that is the rules there. I asked the reason why and they said they want to know where you are if an emergency arises, then they would assume you are sleeping in the lean to. Doesn't make sense but I always put my hammock up next to the shelter or in close vicinity.

Oh man, it seemed like a great idea, but the no-hammocks rule put's a damper on it. I am going to cancel this particular route and post a new one so that I am not leading a group to break park rules.

I'm down for this, but need a bit more notice. Like Philsweep I fully subscribe to the "next-to the lean-to is as good as in it" approach for my personal emergency locating. And, if that's a non-starter for some, there are other nearby areas on the FLT where this would be a non-issue.

FYI I camped at Letchworth in late Oct, hung my hammock up amidst a sea of RV's, and had plenty of people and even 2 staff stop by and say "hey." No one mentioned they weren't technically allowed, so neither did I.
It is a very alert, active sheep, with a stylish, lively carriage.

I use a Juki & Pfaffs w/ assorted attachments, and have serviced lots of vintage machines. Any questions?

The campground itself there is no problem with hammocks. Just for some reason they don't want them on the trail. But I just hang next to the lean to. I just don't think anyone is going to hike out to check up on you at the lean to unless there is some sort of emergency. The FLT is a long trail so there are plenty of other area's where you don't need a permit. That part of the trail is run and maintained by Letchworth state park so they make the rules there.
