How to get campfire smell out of down insulation?

Went camping recently and the campfire was very smoky. It left a smell in everything within 20 feet of the fire. What is the best way to remove the smell besides washing? Washing a top quilt is sorta a pain in the rear end. Any tips or will it wear off on its own?

Hang it outside on a line during the day and it will air out.

"One man's junk is another man's treasure."
Corollary: "One man's campfire stink is another's fragrant aroma."

I love the residual campfire smell on my buff, fleece and camp clothes. Catching a whiff later brings me right back to the campfire. mmmmm. There is a difference between aroma and stink though.

To get rid of it, you can always get some Nikwax Down Wash and wash it, but I'd go with TrailSlug and air it well before I'd go to that length.

You probably have nice hickory, and oak to burn. In Colorado we got stinky pine and aspen, yuck.

I believe washing will be the best bet but a good airing is always worth a try.

Beat me to it, I was going to post something similar.

One man’s smell is another man’s aroma.

    Lol.

I grew up in West Texas where two smells tend to dominate the countryside: oil and cattle. And both smelled like money to me.

You could try some Febreze. I haven't had to get rid of smoke smell but it did a great job of eliminating the funk.

Totally agree with Febreze! Had a incident at a camp grounds with someones dog. Not a direct hit but close enough. Sprayed UQ with Febreze and hung outside, then sprayed again and placed in a tote.Problem solved. Don't over spray!

Personally, I try to avoid washing down unless absolutely necessary... don't want to muck with those natural oils.

I'd air it out, live with a little residual smell (which will totally disappear in time), and remember not to get it anywhere near a campfire again.

In a stiff breeze embers can carry a long way and seriously damage gear. I once got a little pinhole burn in a tent that was pitched more than 30 feet from a fire.
