    UCR FAIL

I'm in the midst of a hammock suspension overhaul and thought I'd give UCRs a try. I made a couple using Tac Blade's UCR Tutorial. His instructions were clear and easy to follow, and I'm sure i did everything correctly. I was pleased with them when I was done.

Until... I tried to use them. I set up, eased myself into my hammock. Just about the time my full weight (240ish) settled in, zzzziiiipppp I hit the ground. Nothing broke, the constricting part of the head-end UCR just didn't hold. I tried it again making sure I "milked" the constrictors and even threw in a half hitch on the tag end but to no avail.

I've heard of people using prussiks to prevent slippage, but when Tac Blades first released his tutorial he seemed quite sure that prussiks weren't necessary. I can only assume he's not quite as heavy as me.

My guess is that I'm still just too heavy for them. Maybe when I get down around 200 or so I'll give them another shot.

Out of curiosity, are there any bigger guys out there using UCRs? If so, how did you make yours?

Glad you didn't get hurt. That being said, it's good to see hangers trying to improve their experience.

I thought the prussik was the only thing that kept the tension on the bury?

ie, required to make it work 100% of the time

i'm betting there's a shug vid demonstrating it

    Can you link Tacblades tutorial?

I found this one, and he uses a prussic, at the beginning at least.

    I recommend adding a prusik.

Hey John, sorry to hear about the spill. Glad it wasn't quick to the ground.

I've had success using a tautline hitch at the end of the constrictor portion. Granted I'm about fifty lbs less, but have had little to no slippage with a 10 inch bury and a simple taught line tensioner.

Perhaps you could try using larger cordage as the buried portion. I know many have commented that when using larger cordage inside of smaller cordage, you get a much better constriction.

I've thought about that, but I only had 7/64 to work with. Maybe some time I'll order some 1/8 for the inside line and give it a go. For now I'm sticking with what I know- whoopies lol.

You can tie the tail into a prusik or you tie it in an overhand knot and then use a whipping knot over the constrictor exit. I orginally used the whipping knot on a loopie sling, mostly because I'm not a prusik fan. It works well. I find that .9mm blind repair cord works best.

This is obviously a zingit crl, but the same exact setup works for a hammock ucr.

I recently made one in dynaglde as well. This one may be a bit confusing because I made it to be symmetrical, so that there is no up or down end. The only difference in this photo is that I larksheaded a dwh to one end. The red stuff is 550 sheathing to protect the thin cord through the dwh. This is a poor photo which I apparently overlooked resizing for a better fit. I'll post it here as a thumbnail, if you click it it's yuuge. This was a SLS experiment. I did hold me a night or two without issue, but even my winter weight is <160.

EDIT > This dynaglide bury is the same length as I use for whoopies - 10" start, 8-1/2" finished.
