I've been using a pack hanger from Dutch fro quite a while, mostly just to keep my bag off the ground.
I'm not sure how hanging the pack prevents critters from getting in it. The ones mentioned; mice, chipmunks, squirrels, etc. are able to climb trees.
I think the feeling is that those critters are less likely to climb the tree and then walk along your hammock suspension to your pack, or to you for that matter.
Using a "Big Carl" or other pack hanger where your pack is right on the tree overnight probably isn't as effective, although I have no data to back that up. It should keep your pack from getting dragged off by smaller critters such as coons and possums tho, which seems a possibility if you simply left it on the ground.
In Florida, it's not just the little rodents, but the bigger ones like opossum, raccoons and armadillos. Also the creepy crawlies like spiders, snakes and centipedes, etc. Oh, and ticks.
I don't like to leave my stuff on the ground if I can avoid it so I use my gear hammock. It next to me like a small hammock and my pack is within easy reach for items I may need.

The added benefit is that I don't have to worry about a little stream developing under me. Although it's never happened. But I'm ready for high tide.

Yes. That way, I can separate the 2. The hammock is on the left of the tree and the gear hammock is on the right side in these pics. Also, It makes it easier to have it next to me and not compress my UQ. Also, I can adjust the height or have a pull out on the gear hammock and not affect my hammock lay.

I trek with a small net hammock to chill out during breaks. At camp it doubles as a gear hammock. I live in the tropics so there’s lots of critters that could potentially rummage through my pack at night. I hang the net hammock under me, which forces me to hang a bit higher than I would like, but at least it keeps the two hammocks from touching each other. In the jungle almost all my gear is wet, except for the precious night stuff like my PJs, the insulation, and the hammock itself, so it’s important to me that the wet items don’t touch the dry ones. I’d love to find a way to hang the two hammocks side by side without touching, and without having to carry a spreader bar; but I admit that I haven’t put too much thought into it. Perhaps by staking a pole or a branch on the ground I can deviate the small hammocks suspension and thus separate it from the main hammock. I’ll try that next time I’m out.
