Warmth for Linville Gorge next week.

Heading to Linville Gorge next week. Temperature from low teens, possible high single digits in upper elevations. Taking my nephew and he has only been on two other backpacking trips. I've got a top cover for a dream hammock, a winter sock, an UQ protector. which would work best together if not all 3. Thanks, Kirk

He may never go again if you freeze him so I'd say take it all as the weather forecast for the earlier part of the week is some serious cold weather. What temp quilts do you have to use?

    ^^^^This

Better to have them and not need them vs no sleep and getting frost bite. Especially up on the trails, it always seems to be colder than what the weather stations says it is.

20* TQ and UQ with a couple of extra ounces of down in TQ. Also a 3/4 40* to compound UQ’s

Take this with a grain of salt (or the whole salt shaker lol) because I've never used a top cover or a sock.

The two combined may create a lot of condensation.

I'll stop there in my ignorance and hopefully more experienced cold weather hangers will chime in.

I'd be warry of the forecasts. It seems they are really missing them right now and even colder weather is heading in. Our forecasted low last night was supposed to be 22° we hit 16°. That's a significant difference. If you have extra quilts to stack this may be doable. The wind is the hidden factor. A lot of wind on those ridge tops and it will be hard to stay warm. Looks like it's supposed to warm up toward the middle to end of the week so it depends on when you are going as well. New Years day and the day after are going to be cold.

I would definitely prepare for colder than expected. as pointed out, better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it. not only might he not want to go again, his mother probably wouldn't ever forgive you.

Honestly, considering that, I would take a rain check or go someplace within your experience and stick with conditions that you're confident of for introducing him to this sort of thing.

It's one thing to take the risk for yourself, entirely different to risk somebody else. It'd be different if he knew what he was getting into, but you're the experienced one, and you're not even sure what you're getting into.

if you're both experienced in survival methods, and you have confidence that he can get through it without you if you get separated, then ok.

I have a 0°F (+5oz) UGQ quilt set, and woke up this morning to -5°F. I was wearing a heavy thermal base layer, and though I was warm, i could feel the outside cold through the quilt. Pretty sure I've been to -13°F with this setup, but I'm wondering now if I'm mis-remembering +13°F... either way, I have backup in the form of my summer quilt set, a reactor liner, and a full body length 36"wide reflectix... which is good, because -12°F low is in the forecast.

Thanks for advice. Looks like temp is changing a bit warmer closer to our departure. first part of trip a tad warmer, we'll hit ridges first part.

Thanks for advice. He has been to Slickrock, with me, a few years back, the low was around 16* . The setup will be better than that trip. I tried his exact setup a few years back and was at 5* comfortably, with the exception of a TQ with 2 more oz of down for him. He is 18, but still momma's boy. I will heed advice and bring more than less.
