Why not just a long and warm under quilt?

    Dear Hangers

If I want to spoil myself with an under quilt, now when the winter is arriving here in Sweden. If I do not want to save money on this deal, not worried about to much weight and especially not want to freeze - why not just a long and warm under quilt?

I mean if it is too warm, you just open up a little?

    Am I thinking wrong?

That's correct. Even when sleeping indoors at 65°, my thick 0° quilt doesn't feel too warm. It's like sleeping in bed with a 10" mattress - double that thickness and you won't feel any warmer.

And yes, if you do get too warm you can loosen it up.

Agreed, I use a 20 degree long UQ in the summer and unless it is beastly hot, it works great.

I think what you would notice getting too hot first would be your sides/shoulders since the UQ wraps up and sort of hugs you. Can't really push that away, so that's why you can reach a point where it would be too much. Like a 0° quilt on a 70° night.

I hope you're not thinking of skipping a top quilt. I saw somebody do that once (in the interests of saving weight). It did not end well!

I assume you mean "just" a regular length, full size UQ, instead of a short one? No reason to go the short direction if you're not concerned with weight, bulk, or price. Keep in mind that a short UQ is also "warm", its just more technical in how you use it with other gear.

You chose well! I have used my Incubator 0 a few times (with a Chameleon) and it is a superb piece of gear. On a recent trip the temperature went from 57°F and rain one night, down to 6-8°F and dry the next two nights, and it was great in both those conditions.

I just got my Incubator 0 a couple of weeks ago and took it on a very cold trip in WV this past weekend. A lot of difficult trail conditions on this trip, but the Incubator handed the 0-2 degree night like a champ.
