I think this pocket system is made to work with Clark's synthetic underquilts (Z liners), which also have a good sag, especially under the legs, from what I tested (once), therefore leaving space for cloths in the pockets.
My impression is that having the underquilt making contact with the skin is less critical with synthetic UQs than it is with down.
I’m still learning, but here’s my impression on the matter:
I think it all depends on whether there are any air leaks. A tight fit is usually preferred because it allows you to be you and make movements without letting out a bunch of hard earned hot air. If you could guarantee a good air seal where it counts and that there won’t be much movement, maybe the air space method could be help, but it would take more time to heat up and would be harder to keep that heat.
