    KAM snaps on hammock itself?

A guy recently posted how he made doors on his Kelty tarp by using KAM snaps. Do you think if you tried to put some KAM snaps on the hammock itself, would it do damage? For example, a few snaps would allow me to snug up my almost-too-wide underquilt to my Ridgerunner hammock at its narrowest point (putting snaps on both). I surely would not want to weaken my RR, though. Has anyone tried that, or do you think it would work?

Installing KAM snaps requires putting small holes in the hammock (or tarp, or whatever). I don't own a bridge hammock, so I can't speak to how small holes might impact the strength of your hammock, but it sounds like a bad idea to me.

I think if you punched the holes with a hot needle so the threads melted around the edges, it shouldn't be an issue.

I am nor an engineer type, however, I see where making holes in nylon could cause problems, there is a lot of stress on the RR fabric.

Plus the UQ needs to snug up to your hammock, scrunching of your quilt would interference with its efficiency.

Just my opinion, but the hem on each hammock has hundreds, if not thousands of holes punched in it by the needle used to sew it. Also, the material is, I assume, ripstop which means it has many heavier threads woven in an x-y and possibly also diagonal pattern for the express purpose of stopping any rips or tears from propagating.

That said, there are probably other (and possibly better) ways to snug the quilt without the snaps. Basically, you snug up the suspension so it sort of lifts the hammock up prior to getting in to prevent any gaps when you weight it. Shug has videos that talk about this.

Again, I'm by no means an expert, and this is just my opinion.

Don't put any holes into the RR hem. Bad idea since there is a support inside the hem.

That said, if you hand sew some snaps that should be fine since you're adding thread and not removing fabric.

When you punch holes for Kam snaps, you're not removing any material. The awl pushes through. While some of the finer threads tear, others are simply pushed to the side to make the hole. No different than sewing. Plus, the side hems of the hammock generally sees very little stress anyway. That's why folks do the knotty mod to take up the slack.

Good to know about the Kam Snaps being different than the other ones.

The WBRR is a bridge hammock with no loose material for a Knotty Mod like a GE hammock. The edges are integral on the RR.

I built a bridge hammock (as well as owning a RR) and that thing is drum tight along the edge. I've thought the same thing as you because it sounds like a awesome way to attach an underquilt but I'm still nervous about poking holes in it.

That being said, I did poke a hole accidently when cutting a thread and covered it with tenacious tape and even before I covered it there wasn't any change in the size of the hold so you might be good with it. Keep us informed if you go ahead.

I'd lean towards velcro over snaps. Holes, yes but much smaller. Personally I will not be doing either of these but people stitch on UQ hooks all the time...
