    Stealthiest Place You've Hung?

What's the "stealthiest" place you've hung?

    Two guidelines before you start:

    1. Stealth camping in this context is a place you are likely not allowed to camp, but there are no signs posted (but doesn't make it right). Probably something like a small wooded area behind your Walmart, high tension lines easement, river bank that is "municipally owned" but always used as a hangout by the local kids, etc. So we're not quite talking billy bob-shotgun-patrolled private land; you should never do that.

    2. Must be overnight...a nap in the park doesn't count.

And of course, no judgement if you don't want to post your "secret".

So I guess my hiding in my Hammock in the backyard doesn't count

Yellowstone NP, in the thick forest just outside the Grant Village Campground. My motorcycle was at the shop/service station just up the road, and the campground was full. I was probably only 30-40 feet off the main road, but the trees were so thick you couldn't see me. Used my alcohol stove to cook, so no campfire.

It was just in-between the campground entrance and the Visitor Center, approximately here on the map: 44°23'35.8"N 110°33'44.0"W

At a big trade show in Europe, I hung in some woods adjacent to the convention center's property for 3 nights. Packed up my stuff and checked my bags into the handy bag check each morning, grabbed them at the close of business each evening and quietly slipped into the trees. It was way better than the designated camping spots in a gravel parking lot. It was next to a farmer's orchards, but a bit unclear as to whose land it was... it was close enough to the main entrance road that I used my tarp primarily to shield my eyes from headlights at night. (I doubt anyone could have seen me from their car though.) There was a faint path off the road, across a stream, and into this patch of woods, so I wondered if others had had the same idea.

The only drawback was that one night, somewhat inebriated, I tried to enter from a different side, got a bit lost, and dunked my bag (a rolling suitcase -- very much NOT wilderness-worthy) and self into a muddy ditch. Better than the year previous, when I got lost in the vast gravel parking lot camping area and wandered around for an hour before finding the correct site!

Well, I think I did not have the oportunity to sleep in a very illegal place yet, but we did have the gendarmes waking us up this summer, while me and my gf were hanging at the edge of a village in the south of France, pretty much on the path where people were walking their dogs and having their morning footing. Apparently a national park we were not really aware of. They kindly informed us that we had forgotten the car's window open by the same occasion.

I also recently slept in a private wood in Normandy, and the guards were patroling at dusk in their jeep and stoped just a few meters away on the forest track for 15 mns, I had to squat and stay still all that time. I didn't know if they had stopped because they had seen me (had a white tee-shirt), so it was a bit frightening. But then they left and did not come towards me.

I'd like to do an overnight hang in the city of Paris some day. I'd be more worried of the beggars around than the police, though.

I've had a few occasions where I ended up within the .25 mile radius from a hut/campground while in the whites. Usually happens when it's getting late and the terrain looks like it will get worse.

I wonder if my neighbours are up for a weekly game of:

    "Where's Waldo?"
"...in Florida, she felt air conditioning for the first time, and it was cold and unnatural upon her skin."
