    FL Peace River Trip

I am taking my daughter on a trip after Christmas to Peace River, Okechobee, and Venice Beach area to do some fossil hunting. This will be our first hanging trip and I'm having a little trouble finding spots online that we can hang overnight. Can anyone suggest some spots in that area that would be good for camping? Thanks!

I'm doing Zolfo Springs to Arcadia this weekend with two other (brand-new) hangers, so I'll be able to tell you lots more in a few days. I can tell you that there are two designated spots along that 31-mile section that we will either use or totally avoid, depending on how populated they are.

We got back from our Peace River trip this afternoon. Apart from the assigned spots just upriver from Arcadia, we found that good hanging spots were hard to come by. Finding the right spot for the first night meant we paddled until close to sunset--but it really was the perfect spot. And if you're fossil hunting, I suspect it's a great place for that, too:

Spectacular view of the moon over the river, several ideal campfire areas, and good trees for four, maybe six hammocks, but not more than that.

Last night we stayed at an assigned site around what they call Hilltop. It was less than ideal; definitely set up for tents. Our trees were pretty close to the river dotting the short path up to the grass, picnic tables, & fire pit. There was no flat ground underneath, just sand, roots, and thorny fallen branches. A couple of us pulled thorns out of our feet today when we got back (me included).

We plan to do it again next year, maybe when the water is higher. The river was 5" below normal and dropping. The current gave us no help.

Been wanting to do this river for a while now, so any info wouldn't hurt. Looks like a great trip DeltaNu and I bet the full moon over the river was cool to see.

Yes... the cell phone photo is poor, or else I'd post it... but the view was spectacular.
