    Quick quilt question... fabric width?

    Say that three times fast...

I'm wondering if it's possible to make a top quilt with Argon 67/90 fabric without needing to add extra width. That is, is the 57" usable width enough to produce a top quilt that is 54-52" wide? (Seems awful close...)

    I'd be doing a 30º quilt with 2" baffles.

If it's not enough width, what do you do? Put a seam down the center at one of the baffles?

Just checked with the underquilt calculator, you'll need 66".
54" is a big quilt, you a big fella?

Ah, I forgot about that handy calculator. Using the topquilt tab gives me an outer shell width of 59".

So what the heck do people do? Put in a seam lengthwise, along one of the baffles?

You can always do the sides of the quilt with a contrasting color. That gains you four inches. Then if you follow it up the curve you can gain a few more.

    Interesting idea, Double...

Well, I hope I've bought enough fabric, but if I need to make another order, so be it. My pattern is also going to get more complicated. Looking at YouTube no one seemed to use more than one piece for the outer shell of a top quilt, but then again, I didn't look at that many videos. Clearly the pros do it differently.

Don't quote me on this, but i believe most venders use a very slight if any differential cut on top quilts. So they get away with being able to go wider without adding extra material.

Zpacks lists widths of 56"-66", though...

I've been wrapping a measuring tape around myself in various 'sleeping' configurations and think somewhere in the neighborhood of 50" might do it, but I really don't want to have gaps.

I'm not large at all, but tend to sleep on my side, which I'm now realizing will effectively increase the coverage needed.

So, I don’t think there is much of a downside to have a wider quilt. If your a side sleeper it’s almost required. If your an ultralight backpacker, I slimmer quilt will weigh less... but if your a car camper or normal hiker/camper the additional few ounces are offset by increased functionality.

I’ve often thought of putting in a Velcro whole like the Jack’s do to make a quilt into a down jacket to wear around camp. Or using a quilt like a stadium blanket at the ice rink in the winter.. or football game or......

What is your sizing like? I'm 5'10", 170lbs, 40" chest and I use a standard width EE Enigma with plenty of quilt to spare. I actually had a wide and sold it because there was too much quilt in a hammock. I have spoken with EE on their sizing and a standard at 54" wide means that the quilt is 54" pulled completely taught. I.E. it's 54" wide before stuffing with down. I think you starting with standard 58" fabric width will be more than enough unless you're on the larger side.
