    going "netless"

    Hi everyone !

I dont really like integrated bugnet, fronkey and half bugnet hammocks, I tried many and I prefer the freedom of a netless hammock. i found out that I feel a little claustrophobia under a bugnet, not while falling asleep but if I wake up in the middle of the night, I just want to open the bugnet to feel "free"...

I know permethrin and picaridin but Im curious to know what else you do when summer camping with your netless hammocks.

Ive seen someone tying a piece of bugnet on the ridgeline... But I guess I will not like it.

    Any suggestions?
Do you think that going netless with permethrin and picaridin is enough?

Can't say for up in your area. For me, down south, when I go hiking its typically in the mountains and I just don't have issues with bugs. Maybe gnats, possibly some mosquitoes during the day, but nothing at night. Especially not in fall to spring weather. So I'm mostly netless all the time, even in summer. Depending on where I'm going, I might take a half net or fronkey net in summer. I typically take a head net as std gear as precaution, but hardly ever use it.

My guess is that you guys up north might get some nasty bugs during the daytime, but not at night when it should cool off substantially?

I live in Quebec Canada and in the woods, lot of bugs by day and it cool off by night, but I dont want to wake up by the morning with some bites on my face.

How do you keep your headnet off your face when you sleep ?

I don't do this but some have slept in a hat w/brim.

While I wouldn't like it, I know of no other solution for your situation.

Mosquitos love me, so unless it's below 50, I always have a net deployed. I tried once sleeping netless once when the low was right around 60, the night started off fine, but by around 6am I was getting eaten alive.

I assume you've already looked at the halfwit and the HUG by AHE? The HUG is like the halfwit, but removable, so you don't have to always bring it or use it. Just one more potential option could be the “flippin the bird” by Dutch. Since it hangs freely on one side, it makes it a bit less claustrophobic, because you can get in and out quicker.

Now that you asked, I am curious what folks have to say about the Picaridin tho. When would it be wise to use Picaridin on top of Permethrin?

Nubé Hammock Shelter has a bugnet that hangs from tarp. Way less claustraphobic.

I remember reading about a tarp with bug netting around the perimeter. It had zippers in the corners to let hammock suspensions through. With no net directly around the hammock, that should help the claustrophobic feeling.
I think there were a couple different brands of them, but NEMO bug out was one.

Go ahead and call me CRAZY but I take a B complex vitamin daily and an apple cider vinegar capsule twice daily. This summer, either July or August here in Georgia when bugs are at their peak I had absolutely zero problem with mosquitoes.Since I treat my clothes with permethrin I removed my shirt for a period of time before bed just to see what would happen-no takers!Works for me is all I know.
