Wow... not sure I'd have the nads for that type of hanging!

The hammock in the top of the picture is the exact type of hammock my brother & I were using on the trail in the '70's. We'd pick them up at the local Army/Navy store (when they still sold the good stuff) and it was called a Pocket Hammock. You could roll them up about the size of a softball & stuff it in your pack. The nylon ends were tied to a metal ring that had about 7-8' of nylon ski rope tied to it for the suspension.

It's come a long way baby!

It's very hard for it to convey unless you use more explanation and graphics

Satire in the written word is difficult to convey. Satire in the spoken word has the advantage of tone and facial expression to clarify the humor. Look how often a post is misunderstood here. Simply adding a smiley can clarify the humorous intent.
I do not believe the writer was being satirical. He is simply ignorant of a solution for his experience.

    Get off my lawn!

I would like to read some of his other writings. Being able to poke the bear on something as simple and wonderful as a hammock takes some talent. At least I hope that is where he was going.....

Satire/polemic - pretty funny in the sense that like onion articles regularly fool people.

Also - for fun see “Poe’s Law”

    Satire?

I think satire has to have a certain balance to it, light at the end of the tunnel, needs to poke fun at something that needs fun being poked at it. But I don't see that here. No, I don't think it is satire.

What I find interesting is that two people (this guy, and me) can approach the same item and come out with totally different outcomes.
I think ultimately it tells more about the indviduals involved than the item in question.

Or this is just a classic troll, which was my first thought on running into this.

I am not sure whether it was an attempt to be funny or not but I'm not a Will Gadd fan. He's a bit of a publicity seeking playboy. His dad, Ben Gadd, OTOH I do like and respect as both an author and a climber. Explore magazine is a rather superficial Canadian version of Outside magazine(which isn't saying much). Consider the source...just say'n.

Will Gadd is a very notable alpinist/climber from Canada. Highly respected for his mountaineering abilities. Perhaps it sheds a little light on his perspective to understand his typical outdoor pursuits do not mesh well with hammocking. Let say a snow cave, a hanging belay ledge, or an elephant's foot amongst the rocks may be much more to Will's liking. HYOY

Being in a hammock regularly almost kills me, and I'd still MUCH rather be in one than on the ground or in a bed. Sucks to be him is what I say!
