What I find interesting is that two people (this guy, and me) can approach the same item and come out with totally different outcomes.
I think ultimately it tells more about the indviduals involved than the item in question.

Or this is just a classic troll, which was my first thought on running into this.
I love satire and dry humor. IMO, this article is not satire. He's hyperbolic, sure. But I don't get a sense at all that he's kidding about disliking hammocks/hammocking. Only the very end makes you think that maybe he's not as serious as he appears. But that would move him from "ridiculous hatred for hammocks" to "don't like them but used hyperbole for humor." Lines about safety and injuries seem a clear indicator that he's not kidding. Also, none of the other articles I can see by him for that publication are satire, so I don't think this one is any different.

I read it as satire - the hyperbole and such reads clearly as satire

It is possibly this is purely a polemic - that he hates hammocks in various ways and this is his honest to goodness attempt to to inflate his feelings on the matter.

I’m inclined to read it more as satire until finding out otherwise.

The term “trolling” has been used here - maybe so...either way many who read this do not believe this person likely feels that strongly by a long stretch lol.

    I could be wrong

I think satire. Regardless, I would like to invite him to a hang. Or at least this forum thread...

Trolling ... I use that term for someone that posts here hoping to incite responses. I am on a few other forums and we have some members that are blatantly trolls. "Have you tried ...?" Then they do not respond, or do not respond for days. they seem to like incited heated discussions.

The words by Will Gadd were posted here by someone else hoping to inform us of what they read somewhere else.

He is looking at the entire experience from only one point of view. Hence the article is not worth arguing about.

I didn't read the rest of the posts, but that article just reeks of misinformation and falsely noted statistics. I mean, he mentions after the injury statistics about lot's of knots being tied by low paid workers and such, which says to me he's referring to cheap nylon or rope hammocks. I can only guess that the statistics are based mostly on those backyard deck type rope lounging hammocks on cheap stands that people don't lay in correctly and that flip over like Lucille Ball trying to get a nights rest. It's just a terrible article but fortunately it is an opinion piece so doesn't really mean or say anything.

With that, I shall retention our tarps for night two out in the cold! 27 last night, might get down into the teens tonight!! THANK YOU GEORGE LOCO LIBRE TOP QUILT MASTER!!!!

Poe's Law applies here. These days, click count is placed above accuracy and integrity. Who's to say what the author actually thinks of hammocking.

"Adventure" or "outdoor" athletes are notoriously like this. They live in very....very small bubbles. The community shouldn't take the article personally. They can be good people but their personalities almost always come across as mmmmmm douche bag. I guess its the same personality that drives them to be extreme athletes. I had altercations with more than one during my outdoor industry days. It always started off hot but ended up alright most of the time.
