What's The More Important Quilt: Top or Bottom?

Let's say you were heading out on a hammock adventure and it is forecast to be 20F. Which combo would you choose, a 50F top quilt with a 20F underquilt; or a 20F top quilt with a 50 F underquilt? That is, which is more important in keeping you warm when things get chilly?

I wouldn't choose either - those are pretty radical and undesirable choices. Personally, I always use quilts with matching ratings - 20* UQ with 20* TQ. So I'll never know the answer to which is more important.

If you don't choose, you get a 40 F top AND bottom quilt for 20F conditions. You're gonna be in deep trouble, silver surfer.

20° UQ that is wide. You can supplement the top with a quilt liner or more clothes.

    20 UQ, 50TQ.
And a bunch of hand warmers, down coat, hot water bottle, couple hats, UQP, etc, etc.

Well, SS is correct that the night will suck either way.

But if I HAD to choose between a warmer (lower temp rating) TQ or UQ, I would choose the warmer UQ.

thats a weird question. Why is that a question? They are both equally important, you need both to keep you warm. Yes it's easier to supplement a tq than an uq with more layers, but it that the question?

I typical will rock my 40* TQ and a 0* UQ to temps into the teens. I will bring a fleece blanket to supplement a little warmth in my footbox. I personally think the UQ keeps me warmer at night. IMO

I think that most people upgrade their gear piece by piece. So which to improve first to handle colder weather, top or bottom quilt? But instead of just asking that, I put it as how to handle a dangerous scenario in order to get higher ratings.

For me, the UQ is more important to my warmth. I can supplement my TQ with my jacket, hat, gloves, butt pad, etc. I often take a 3-season UQ and a 40 degree TQ for expected temps in the mid to upper 30's; works pretty well.
