Most excellent. More data is clearly needed on Lunar (and Martian) hanging. If Elon gives me a free ride, I volunteer to save money by supplying the Dutch netless.

Given that gravity is weaker on Mars, I bet we could go lighter on the fabric choices.

And the lack of precipitation and insects means you can save weight on your tarp and bugnet too!

The biggest problem would be finding trees the right space apart...

I just watched this the other day, lol. I like Amy's vids , they always have neat little factoids that not many people would know, plus she's cute lol. Could you imagine trying to sleep ON TOP OF A ROCKET ? And with Neil still in his bulky suit and foot under the DSKY, one wrong move or bumping it the wrong way could pull wires out and not allow them to put NOUNS or VERBS in, or possibly even strand them on the moon since the DSKY is the GUIDANCE COMPUTER ! NO wonder he couldn't sleep!

I bet the skin of the LM would make an awesome UQ/vapor barrier here on earth! Dune buggies, hammocks, dehydrated food... Sounds like the typical camping trip lol.

The bored engineer in me is thinking if we were to do this today...

simple gathered end hammock, with the lightest material. Earth's gravity being 2.5 times mars... and i think it's 6x the moon, so I doubt we will have capacity issues with anything much stronger then tissue paper. Actually, I wonder what the stress is on the fabric, I'll do the math in the morning.

Anyway, super light hammock, so lets say 6oz? Then you have to anchor it right? I guess the question is, can the structure support it? The lander will be in a vacuum in the case of the moon, or a rarefied atmo if on mars (I think, don't know off hand what the run for internal pressure on these things), so the hammock would actually help the structure.

So, lets call it 1/2 atm pressure dif inside to out, and since i'm not getting a calc out, lets call that 7psi. force pulling inwards would then be (at 30° suspension angle) around, lets call it 80 lbs on mars. So about 11in^2 would be enough wall area to cancel out the forces trying to pull the anchor points together. That probably isn't an issue. (all of that per side)

Another option perhaps, run a "ridge line" that's a carbon fiber tube between your two anchors. We are only talking about a force of 160ish lbs right? Hell I've made tubes out of newspaper that could take that kind of load.

Might have to get a bit creative with anchor points depending on how cramped your lander is, but this is rocket science after all. That shouldn't be the most difficult solution. But sounds like we can get a hammock sleeping solution for somewhere sub 1lbs easy. Makes any other sleep system in syfi just look bulky. Hell, makes the nasa in 1969 version look bulky. And i'm sure we could rig up some type of mylar space blanket that's tuned for temp pretty easy. Let me get my hole punch.
