    Lightbulb Animals and hammocks

    Hi one and all,

I’m planning to do a round the world trip on a bike with a hammock (& a tent where required ).
The main areas I would be looking at using the hammock would be between Canada and Chile but would also be keen to use it in China and parts of South Eastern Europe.

As I haven’t done any hammocking in anywhere other than Britain I just want to check for an possible problems that could be faced when it come to animals and critter with my main concerns being snakes and large carnivores.

Are there any others that I need to be aware of and any advice on how to prevent snakes and other critters from joining me in my hammock?

No matter how much I want a new scarf 😉

PS. I have a heavy duty bug net so biting insects are not a major problem..... I hope

You probably have a lot to learn about snakes and carnivores considering the countries you want to visit. Here in America, bear bags will be essential where bears are present. I doubt there are carnivores in Europe, but there will be in South America. Snakes aren't something I typically worry about in America, but read up on where you're going in South America to find out what is worrisome.

    Watch out for CHUPACABRA!

Seriously though, I honestly don't think you should be concerned with snakes crawling in your hammock with you, especially if you have a bugnet cinched around your suspension. Like SS mentioned above, you will want to study the areas you'll be in to see how to avoid/deter any large predators that may live there.

When sleeping on the ground, the rule of thumb is to not lay out your sleeping bag until you’re ready to get into it. That will stop snakes finding it a good place to sleep.
Probably not an issue for a hammock.

As for snakes? A hammock would be gift-wrapping for this biggie:

Horrifying moment villagers cut open a giant python and discover their missing friend inside who had been swallowed whole after being crushed to death

    WARNING: GRAPHIC CONTENT
Akbar Salubiro, 25, went missing after setting off to harvest palm oil in Indonesia
Friends found a python in his back garden and feared he had been swallowed
Local used 18-inch hunting knife to slice open the snake and found Akbar inside
People 'heard cries' night before he was found inside seven-metre long python

I was surprised once by some noise right below my hammock.

What was it? A fearless skunk! I didn't know how to handle it, and it didn't want to leave. And then he came back later!

In my experience, they are fairly timid creatures. Sort of cat-like. I don't think they really want to spray, it's a defense mechanism.

That said, don't go trying to pick one up because they are cat-like...
