Great question. I've been itching to try a gathered end hammock again and been wondering about this same thing. Been looking at a Half Zipped wide, but would the benefits of the wider width be negated by a standard width underquilt? Do they make wider width uq's? Or would you do a longer length?
I have the same concern about wide hammocks and under quilts...do you have to get a wide UQ?...how wide? I have some UGQ zeppelins but don't really want to buy any more under quilts if I can avoid it (however, if the lay is that much better in a wide....hmmmm)
wide hammocks can be harder to get out of. My 90" wide tablecloth hammock is ridiculously hard to get out of. The sides come up way too high. My 58" hex 2.4 hammock is so much easier to get out of. I do find that sleepinng at the angle I find most comfortable, my feet are at the very edge and sometimes fall out. I'm 6'2" tall and feel I could use about 6" more on the 58". Think I'm gonna cut the tablecloth down to 65" and try it out.
I am 6ft 2 and 275+ lbs. To be comfortable I need a gathered end hammock that is about 64" wide.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !
I have two wide hammoks, one with a knotty mod and one with tieouts. With both of these hammocks, excess fabric is not a problem. With the knotty mod, it creates a kind of cacoon where the fabric tightens and partially drapes around you, just make sure the mod is installed on both the head and foot ends. With the tieouts, the fabric is pulled taught to where it stays out of your way.
