Trip through WV,VA,NC and SC need cool stuff to do!!!

Hey all looking for so good hiking to do on a short trip to Coastal Carolina for a College visit.

We are traveling 11-9,10,11 and return the 12th. We are looking for some good hiking to get ourselves out of the car, so day hiking really. Also if there is any good shopping for outdoor gear that maybe only in those locations that would be fun too. Sight seeing....all keeping on a tight budget (Need as much spending money for gear...lol)

Just looking to enjoy some time with my adventurous daughter on our mini trip. Please free to post about anything cool in the are I am traveling see below link for the route I am planning on taking.

You will be crossing the Appalachian Trail in Virginia so that would be a good hike.

Grayson Highlands in VA It would not be far out of your way and would be worth a stop, there is a campground in the state park if you wanted to make this an overnight stop.

Further out of your way, but awesome Dolly Sods in WV

Way out of your way is the Smokies
Clingman's Dome (just googled and the tower is closed, but there are great views from the parking lot)
From Clingman's Dome lot the easy hike to Andrew's Bald is great
Fontana Dam is big and cool and you can hike to Shuckstack Fire Tower for great views.

Stone Mtn. State Park in N.C. would be close to your path and make for good day hike.

Hanging Rock State Park in NC. Just North of Winston Salem (Danbury) has hiking trails of various distance.

Click on the "Park Map" link and it will show the trail info.

Trying to logically follow a semi direct route from memory, except for the gorge but that could be reserved for your way back. Good luck school shopping, my girl rejected Coastal and I was relieved.

Bungee Jump off the New River Gorge Bridge WVA, what a view!
Natural Bridge VA. there are also caverns nearby, loved this place growing up, was private now public, googlefu.
Smith Mountain Lake, beautiful very clear water.
Outer Banks NC, cruise on the beach and spy out the wild horses
    The big ditch, Lineville Gorge

Don't forget to stop for good NC/SC BBQ, livermush, country ham biscuits, fish camps, Carolina Hot Dogs and cobbler.
    Good after hiking.

REI in Greensboro NC which is a short detour from your route.

Uwharrie NF has lots of good hiking trails.
I am still 18 but with 52 years of experience !

More detail for above recommendations. Stone Mountain State Park is not too far off your route - it has a 6 mile loop trail. Lunch on top of the big rock face is a treat. If going there on the way down I would take US 21 from Wytheville. Speaking of Wytheville, exit 70 off I-81 has a tourist information center across the street from Sheetz.

New River Gorge Bridge is about 30 min north of I-77 on US 19 (obey all speed limit signs). There is a tourist information center near the 4-lane at the Oyler Ave exit about 10 miles north of I-77 (across street from the hotel), and there is a visitor center just north of the bridge. New River National Recreation Area has many hiking trails, but they would be out and back. Hard to make a loop.

US 220/ I-73 in NC goes right by Uwharrie National Forest in southern NC. Trails mostly out and back - also hard to make a loop. There used to be a roadside stand near Ulah on US 220 where I would stop when the kids were small for peach ice cream and peach dumpling. My grown son has been there with his wife - says there is a whole store there now.

No posts above mentioned Jefferson or Washington National Forests. You will drive through or very near both of those. May want to consider Nat Geo maps and pick trails for hiking.

Grayson Highlands is probably ~1 hr off your route, but you should have an opportunity to see wild ponies.

The only place I have been camping in SC is Edisto State Park about 45 minutes south of Charleston. Not a lot of hiking trails there, but being able to camp 100 feet from the beach was great. Do not know if that campground has reopened yet since their last hurricane.
