Never been camping in the Chicago burbs in January. Kinda scary cold that time of year, no? I survived a fall hang in VA with 21* night temps and no wind using only a 20* UQ but was cold. Wanderlost loaned me an additional 40* UQ the next night that made the next night bearable. Would there be a local bail out option if conditions became really unpleasant?

there is a 3 sided CCC shelter there with a fireplace we typically tarp off to create a warming hut which works ok . it is a 3 mile hike or bike ride to the trail head parking lot.

It wouldn't be the first time someone just hunkered down in front of the fire in the shelter......
Last year my termometer read -5 on the second night with is my personal low for hammock camping, and except for my feet, I was nice and toasty. Going to give the hot water bottle in my footbox a try this year.
