In an emergency a Figure 8 knot will achieve the same effect (i.e. putting a loop in the middle of a rope).
Once you load the Figure 8 up with serious weight, I assume that it becomes very difficult to untie.

Can anyone confirm whether the Alpine Butterfly unties easily once it has been loaded?

I'll have a play with the Alpine Butterfly next time I'm out bush and have a spare carabiner with me to hook my tarp to the loop.

I haven't seriously loaded one yet. But I've yanked it to set it in paracord, and it always comes apart easily.

Established climbing knots have withstood the test of time (as attested to by the survivors ) and consequently are meant to be able to untie. If you look at the alpine butterfly, you can see how you can "break" the knot over the loop to loosen it up.

gmcttr, I’m amazed by your knot skills, way over my head—pun intended.

Phantom skeeerd of heights. I remember you posted being way up high in tree tops.

Alpine butterfly loop resists jamming, even after heavy load; better than most knots, certain types of rope are more prone to jam. YMMV

Alpine butterfly loop is my choice. I’ve not learned to tie it around a post like gmcttr shows in his video.

Indeed. Once did a course with American Alpine Institute that included crevasse rescue and spent some time hanging from one with a full pack while mates set up a z-pulley, etc. Of course that was with 11mm climbing rope. However, I have found it easy enough to untie with 1.2mm z-line (Poly sheath, spectra core). I don't know about Atwood Micro cord... I haven't tried that yet.

And I also haven't learned the 'tie-around' method. I think I would use something else for that anyway.
