    Tree Strap question

I'm a newbie, and getting ready to order my first hammock. I've chosen everything, but on the order form it gives me choice of 6-foot, 10-foot, or 15-foot tree straps. I'm sure I'll end up buying different lengths eventually, but I don't want to immediately buy all possible sizes.

My question: If I go for the 15-foot, and I'm hanging in a place that really only needs 10-straps or 6-foot straps, is the worst case scenario that I simply have the remaining length hanging down to the ground? There's no downside to a "too-long" tree strap besides the added weight that I had to carry, right?

    Thanks!

    You are correct.

Also, long straps can easily be shortened once you see what your conditions allow.

+1 to reply above! Cost and weight are usually the only difference. Longer can be made shorter. Too short would have to be replaced.

From my personal experience my my 9 foot straps have never let me down and I have total confidence in them but my 7 foot straps cause stress because I have to pick the right sized trees the right distance apart. I hate wondering if I'll be able to set up where I want.

Congratulations on your first hammock order!

Easy to wrap the unused length up in the figure eight wrap and keep it out of the way so there's no trip hazard. Until you get used to your kit, a little extra length won't hurt!

Thanks! I just realized that I could also simply wrap the straps around the tree multiple times so I don't have the unused strap portion hanging down to the ground. I should have thought of that... lol

I'm sure that after I've been at this a while, I'll be better able to assess what length(s) I'll need in my inventory, and good suggestion that they can always be shortened.

I'll present a different perspective. To save weight you can get shorter straps, maybe 10 feet, and carry a couple of 4' amsteel dogbones. That way you can lengthen your suspension if the situation dictates.

I have found that 12' tree straps have worked 90% of the time. I have 15' straps, but they're overkill, unless you regularly hang from really big trees. Since I'm using Beetle Buckles now, I'm probably going to switch to 10' straps plus Amsteel extension dog bones for wide hangs.

I have 15 foot dyneema straps from Dutch. All one piece, great for knots, not good with hardware. Very light and compact.
If I used buckles, then the strap would be heavier and less compact, and would make 12 foot straps a better choice.

Beetles don't add much, in either weight or bulk. That's what I have on my 15' dyneema straps. But if under a requirement to trim down, I'd go with shorter straps & ground toggles for an MSH.

    Dyneema or poly dyneema
Dutch's dyneema is blue with black racing stripes
And his poly dyneema looks to be black or gray and white.
Lots of new gear for me to learn.
If blue dyneema with black racing stripes--Do you use hardware with blue dyneema?
