I’m pretty sure all that down inside a lot of that nylon below possible said candle would burn up pretty good too. This has been a scary thread to read before bed, fire in hammocks is the stuff of nightmares! I’m glad it was brought up though, hope it helps us all be extra safe while hanging.

So, I guess a reasonable amount of caution would allow you to safely use a candle lantern under your tarp, but the biggest challenge in the hammock is the jostling of the candle and the liquid wax that makes a considerable mess when you move about in your hammock.
My UCO Candle lantern doesn't leak any wax ever. The puddle is very small and flame is contained entirely inside the lantern. Any spilled wax drips down the metal tube that holds the candle inside the outer case. There is about a 1/4" gap between the two. I think the only thing that might melt the nylon would be the top cap as it gets very hot. It actually does act as a heater and distribute a ton of heat.

I do see the point with any other candle.

A lot depends on your exact setup.... Nylon and flames don't mix.... So you definitely need to ensure that your candle or other flame based lantern is well clear of the tarp.....

Also you do need to be aware of carbon monoxide but this should not generally be a problem if you have open ends in your tarp

I still break out my DIY candle lantern from time to time, mostly in the winter when there are so many hours of darkness.
    Good luck,

I still love mine, it smells like apple pie.
    Thanks Red.

As in all things, it depends.

In summer temps in Arizona Sonora desert, the temps get to 100-deg F to 110-deg F or so during the day on the desert floor in the July to August time frame.

Not much you can do with puddled wax with a string laying on top.

In cooler temps it is fine, although I melted my fair share of candles in UCO Brass Laterns in the 80's.

Had to do a lot of cleaning out that last 15% of candle. In cooler temps this is not much of a problem.

Put four of them suspended in trees surrounding the cardinal compass points of your hand, quite enchanting at night, especially with brass and the "cone dish" reflectors on top. They radiate an surprising amount of heat under a tight to ground tarp.
