The underquilt IMHO, is necessary gear for hammock camping. Down is my insulation of choice as I don't really camp in excessively humid areas. So so warm, and comfy... like Porsche, there is no substitute (per Tom Cruise in Risky Biz)...

If you can, try an UQ that has a clew and nettle suspension. It 'feels" better to me than a traditional long shock cord suspension. It's more comfortable IMHO.
When lay down on my Greylock 4 every night there is an immediate sensation of a tiny bit of warmth on my back.
I cant say that the temp matters.
I always feel it.

"...in Florida, she felt air conditioning for the first time, and it was cold and unnatural upon her skin."
I tried pads.I would do better staying on a bull or wild bronco than a pad.The pad I used that was the perfect size for my WB Blackbird was hard and uncomfortable. So I surrendered to the downy goodness and have never regretted it.(but I have never gone to ground or gotten it wet either)
