    First Hammock: Indoor only

I'm brand new here, and I don't own a hammock yet. I have my sights set on a good hammock like the WBBB this coming spring.

But in the meantime, I want to practice my hangs between now and then by setting one up indoors. I don't want to fork out a lot of money, and I saw the WB Traveler and also a Dreamhammock for around $50-$65.

But I also see some pretty inexpensive hammocks on Amazon - like around $25. They're probably cheap Chinese knockoffs that I would never want to use on the trail, but would they be okay for me as a practice hammock for the next few months, and for getting used to spending a night off the ground? Or do you think that the inferior quality could cause issues like back pain or something else?

I'm about 180 lbs and 5' 10", if that matters.

Most of the chinese massed produced ones are short......like 9ft. Great for my little kids, not so much for adults.

If you can swing the $65, get the dreamhammock or dutch netless hammock. WB is good as well. If you search the forums you will find several topics for hanging in doors. I recommend the L-tracks.
When the wife asks, I simply say "Shug made me do it".

If you want to save money... make your own! Seriously so inexpensive and easy to do.

But if you are going to purchase one, you're always better off going with a cottage vendor like Dutch or others, especially compared to the cheapos on Amazon.

Longer hammocks will give a flatter, more comfortable lay.

I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.

Warbonnet traveler XL would be recommendion. You could add a bug net and under quilt later if you wanted to take it outside.

I haven't tried a table cloth hammock, yet, but they seem to work well for many people. If you want to use it indoors only, get the largest one. The finished (!) length shouldn't be shorter than 11'.

The Warbonnet Traveler XL is a great hammock, and it comes ready to hang with a suspension. Other than Warbonnet, there's Dream Hammock, Wilderness Logics, Simply Light Designs and a couple of lesser known small makers. Most of them offer custom solutions. Want a longer hammock? A wider hammock? A specific fabric or color? They'll do it for you. Just ask.

    Thanks

Thanks for the ideas. I was thinking of making my own eventually but don't own a sewing machine and have never sewed. A friend of mine will be gifting me one of her old ones and I think I'll try it.

But I'll probably purchase one of the ones you guys suggested in your replies. I suppose it can't hurt to have 2 hammocks to choose from. Or 10... lol

You're one of us now. There's a twelve step program but no one yet has passed step one: Admit that I'm powerless over new hammock naps.
