What this idea really is, is a great way to try out the idea of snake skins. If you don't have snake skins already, go get a loofah and try this, really. Sure, it will tear as soon as you don't baby it so it won't last long at all. But it's better than no snake skin, well worth the $1, and it will quickly sell you on the idea and you will end up making or getting better snakeskins down the road. But in the meantime, try this.

Just getting into the idea of hammock camping (getting tired of getting onto and off of the ground in a tent), and I like to really really read and research when I'm getting into something new. On the other hand, I'm really really cheap. I used to wrestle way back in the day, and happened to wrestle during a brief period when wrestling tights (spandex from foot to waist) were popular in our area. Found an old pair from my high school days, used a pair of scissors to separate the legs into two halves, and stitched each half up to the waist. Each snake skin is nicely tapered, and since they've lasted through all types of hell, I know that they're going to be durable, and man do they stretch.

Total cost 2 hours of labor (including the time spent searching for my old tights), and $0.

They definitely tear easy, but are still functional after being torn ( I suppose it depends how extensive the tear is). I have used loofah snakeskins for years, and never bought a real one.

WTF is loofah? In this context. I know the kind you scrub you feet with, but surely that's not what you talk about.

Now I just need to figure out how to get a hammock into either of them.

Buy 4 yards of 1oz mesh and you can make 5 for $30. Sew a strait line nothing fancy.

Like many others here, I tried the loofahs just long enough to determine that the idea is a good one, and that real skins would be better. Made some from window sheers, then transitioned to legit mosquito netting from the fabric store. This summer I even made a--what, anaconda skin?-- for my new jacks r better UQ. Love it, and all my skins. Great addition to my kit. Of course, ymmv.....
