Sew some pole pockets that would dangle from the apex connectors, maybe 6", to receive tarp support poles of 18-24" or so, depending how long your tarp is relative to your apex spread. Fix some shock cord to your poles maybe a foot below the tail end of the pocket, and run it through the tail end, to hold the pocket/pole flexibly upright inline with the poles.

Started a new thread about my new packable stand, made from steel conduit,
    https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...sahedron-Stand

I also pitch a tarp over it, there's a video if you are interested.

It’s taken three days but I have now read this entire thread. This tensahedron design is fantastic and simple. I’m excited to try it. I’ve been taking notes. Has anyone tried the emt conduit cut into 3 sections and telescoped with 3/4” and 1” and use the button clips to hold in place? Or emt and some other pipe with the button clips? Emt is simple but having something that you can telescope on the cheap DIY hasn’t been discovered.

Now onto the commercial thread. Your telescoping product looks great.

Mine's sectional (1m lengths), but not telescoping. Went for push-fit instead of clips or bolts, wanted to avoid drilling holes and weakening things.

Next iteration will prolly use these,
    https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MAST-SET-...19.m1438.l2649
18' aluminium mast set (6 x 3 Foot sections)... will need two sets, but will be much lighter (just not on my wallet!!).
Was thinking of linking the sections with shockcord (inside the tubes), like tent poles.

    Whaddya think Todd/Cheryl?
Would the 1.25" (1.6mm wall) be strong enough, or would I be better going for the 1.5" diameter.

At 1.25” diameter you might see some pole deflection with about 300lbs in the hammock (say you have a guest), especially if you bounce a bit. We did.

EMT is too sloppy to use without making shims. Other than that it would work, but heavy.

Gadget, holes are not an issue. My Alpha stand - still my only Tensa stand - is so full of holes as we changed where they went - that we call it the Holey stand. The only problem with the extra holes is the spring buttons find them. I have filled most of the unused holes with epoxy.

Depends on how long you are making your poles. All we have strength tested is to 8.5'. Remember that columnar buckling strength falls off exponentially.

If you are having fun with the experimentation process, by all means carry on. if you just want a compact and lightweight stand that the experimentation and implementation has been done for you, then buy ours

Thanks Cheryl, but I'll pass thanks. I think it's the tinkering I enjoy more than the using.
I don't think I will bother with the aluminium mast poles, did the sums, not gonna be less than 11lb for the stand, so hardly backpackable. The steel one will be fine for car camping.
I have made a tensegrity stand (like the HandyHammock and yours), that will have to serve for treks... note to self - must finish the video on that!

Although... There might be milage in a CF version of the half-a-tensahedron stand,

I reckon I could do that in CF for around a kilo, which is backpackable territory.
I know you as a "metals-gal" poo-poo CF, but my background is in boat and surfboard manufacture, so I ain't afraid of it.
