Hikes near Ashville, October 20th. 21st

I am going to be staying in Ashville for the weekend, visiting my daughter for fall break at University of North Carolina. I was wondering if anyone could suggest any day hikes or even overnight places to hang out close to Ashville. I am not very familiar with the area but I am sure there are tons of cool places. Thanks for any help. I am sure I will be more trips in the near future.

I love Pisgah National Forest, especially the Art Loeb Trail and the area around Graveyard Fields. The hike up to Black Balsam (and hour or so) offers great 360 degree views, but you will have to hang your hammock down off of the bald. There are also a couple of waterfalls down by the Parkway with places to hang. Lots of loops can be created depending on how far you want to go )or anywhere at all) and where you want to hang. There is a road at mile marker 420 on the Blue Ridge Parkway that will take you to parking along the road. PM me if you need help planning some hikes.

About an hour south is a nice trail system called Panthertown Valley. I just completed an overnight there two weeks ago and it was great camping.
Nice drive through Brevard and Lake Toxaway to get there too!

Just a note: no overnight camping at Graveyard Fields (bears) and bear vaults required on Art Loeb north of the Blue Ridge Pkwy

Perhaps slightly closer, there are the Craggy Gardens, and the trail system around the Montreat Conference Center

There are lots of trails off the BRPWY as well including day hikes up to Mt. Pisgah and Frying Pan Mountain (with a lookout tower). I'd check out HikeWNC for ideas on those.

The Plott Balsam area is also nearby.

I just wanted to say thanks for all the input from everyone, my first time to AshEville . We traveled the parkway and hiked the pisgah forest ,also craggy gardens and catawba falls, graveyard fields. Black balsam was way to crowded. Anyway had an awesome time and can't wait to go back for more. But definitely not in October.

Glad you had a good time.
October, you were here for the color change of the leaves.
It is busy there a lot of the time. Also really busy during the blueberry harvest. People show up with 5 gallon buckets.
The point there is to hike far enough to get away from most of them.
    I collect vintage camp stoves.
    I roast coffee at home.

Yes, I agree about the crowds, I have been checking on other times and I'm thinking about doing some longer hikes and trying to go in late April.
