That's really interesting. I've never woken up from TOO much swinging. If anything, I'd like my hammock to swing more!

I would tie it out to something.

There's also ways that you hang that will help. For example, my main hammock hangs from the straps that are connected to the eye-bolt loop. It doesn't swing much, but when I had amstell on the loops, it would swing more. Different connection point to your hang-point will affect how much your hammock will swing in general. I would play around with that connection point, maybe add something creative to it, so it doesn't swing much. Maybe add a square caribiner? You get the idea.
    I'd rather be hanging.

Haha, Mine too. Wife's got a bad back and I roll around like a Walrus. She can't take my tossing and turning, and I get bad sleep if I do, so she get's her own bed (with the pupper's of course) and I get to hammock every night (Which consequentially forces me to stop tossing and turning.) Win-Win! Anyhow, a few cushions should be just enough to dampen the movement. Good luck! Let us know how things turn out, and I wish your health a speedy recovery.

I love rocking in my hammock and would love some automated way of creating this sensation. Now I know, don't treat the cough.

Automatic hammock rocker you say... Once the momentum is going, it wouldn't need much effort to keep going, kind of like a baby rocker. Now... how to attach a small (silent) motorized pendulum to the inflection point created by your bum...

    Wag the Hammock?

I have heard of people tying a small piece of cord to a tree or similar and bringing the other end into the hammock.

That way, when they want to swing, they just pull the cord.

About 15 oz of Robitussin® DM, mated with some Stags Leap Cabernet Sauvignon...you may never wake up.

Add a little honey, lemon and hot water you will sleep like a rock. May take 2-3 doses to work.
