When its between 20° & 40° I just wear one pair of wool socks, but when it gets colder than that I might also wear my down booties. I have a few different thicknesses of wool sock so I can keep my feet from getting too hot and starting to sweat..... sweat + freezing temps = long cold night. Mine are just plain old Eddie Baur goose down slippers that I only wear inside my hammock to keep the bottoms clean, but Goosefeet Gear , Feathered Friends and a few others make excellent down "socks" and offer a water proof over bootie with a tough textured outer sole for wearing them around camp or when you need to get up in the middle of the night. I typically sleep cold, but just a good pair of wool socks should be fine for most people at average winter temps. Also, chemical hand warmers work great when put in your TQ footbox. Get the kind that's for putting in your shoes, they have a sticky strip on the bottom that will keep them stuck right where you need them. And don't ever go to bed with cold feet!!! They will never get warm. And like mentioned above, too many layers can be counterproductive, get the right quilts for the temps you'll see, wear a thin to mid base layer when its colder and go to bed warm. Do that and keeping your feet warm will be MUCH easier.

Here's my mid weight wool socks, I have 4 pair and they get worn the most

Here's the down slippers. They have a shock cord sinch around the ankles to keep them on and to help vent if needed

Couple of things I do depending on how cold cold is

Clean very loose fitting wool socks go on clean dry feet. If my feet still get cold then it's time for the hot water in a bottle, in a zip lock freezer bag then it goes into a wool sock. I will normally put the water bottle on my groin area which heat the femoral artery. That will make me warm all over.

Next line of defense is down booties without the wool socks. I find my feet sweat if I do both so I wake up with cold toes in the middle of the night.

Make it about 75" long and you'd have a dandy TQ...
Seriously tho... I'd just look for a cheap used down bag on Craigslist and cut it off below the zips. Quick folded over hem and... baddabingbaddaboom!

So true! I've been camping with people that no matter how many times you tell them, they can't wrap their head around that idea. They only add more clothes after getting cold the first night.

Exactly. And socks separate your feet so you can’t combine them for warmth.
    I sew things on youtube.
I don’t sew on commission, so please don’t ask. Thanks.

I've also used hand warmers rolled into the hem of boxer briefs just over the femoral artery. Socks always make my feet colder so I just don't. I dry my feet before putting them in my quilt. When I use a 3/4 UQ, I put my thermarest sit pad inside the footbox of my TQ.
