Good idear?
Or nay. nay. thrice nay?
Thought I might turn these two into 20 degree quilts.
I would rarely need anything lower in Gitmo Fema fema_regions.jpgRegion IV.

I know the Greylock and possibly the Hudson River were (at one time) rated as 20 degree quilts but now they are rated @25-30 degree quilts.
Is your Hudson River an older version that was rated @ 20?

My suggestion is to call the Jacks and explain what you are trying to do and get their input. I have always found them to very helpful when I was purchasing from them and had to made a decision between two of their products.

Here is an interesting forum discussion on it.
I am pretty convinced that overstuffing 1 ounce (on the current JRB models in question) is the way to go for me.
Adding 1 ounce of over-stuff increases warmth by 5 degrees. Exactly what I want for $10.

"...in Florida, she felt air conditioning for the first time, and it was cold and unnatural upon her skin."
Keep in mind that JRB already over stuffs and doesn't recommend extra.

A JRB Hudson River has 12 ounces of 800+ fill goose down and is rated for 25-30 degrees.

By comparison, an HG incubator 20 has 12 ounces of 850 goose down and is rated for 20 degrees. (An Econ version has 13.2 ounces of 800 duck down)

An extra ounce or two can buy a bit of confidence, but I don't think it's necessary. In most cases, for the same price as 2 ounces of overstuff, you can just buy the next warmer quilt. It is my belief the Jacks are just extra conservative on their ratings. I had a JRB MW3 with 2 ounces of overstuff that I was really warm in at 17 degrees. I now have a MW4 and never worry.
Let us know what you decide! I really like my JRB gear!

They changed their rating from 20-25 degrees to 25-30 degrees on these two quilts sometime after 2009.
Must be a reason why.
I just want the 5 degrees back.

Each company is usually conservative. By fill ratings and down used, I still thinks jacks are just being modest. So did you order yet? If so, what did you go with? I'm seriously considering a GL4 with the current sale.
This chart is not accurate. They do not use 1.1 oz. ripstop (30D) for the shell material anymore.
