    Storing a Down UQ

    Greetings all....

I'm considering purchasing a down UQ. My current UQ is a DIY using climashield Apex. I keep it rolled up and stored in a plastic tote when not used. Can I do this with a down UQ? I just don't have the space on my boat for storing my quilts un-rolled and hung from a hanger....

    Thanks....

Down needs to be at least stored in a nice big cotton bag so it's not compressed and can breathe - so they say

AFAIK, storing it in a bin shouldn't be an issue... The key is to keep the down uncompressed.
When you say "rolled" that might pose a problem - you don't want a tight roll as that will compress the down.

I have a many decades old (70's) duck down sleeping bag that was passed down to me that spent much of it's life between seasons stored in a cardboard box.
The box was oversized, and the bag lightly draped into the box such that it allowed the down to fully fluff. I continue to store it that way, and it still has it's loft and warmth (and I still use it for sub-freezing campouts).

I prefer the "large" cotton laundry bags you can get on Amazon. Not only are the quilts not compressed, they can breathe unlike in a plastic tote. No moisture = NO mold!

If the bins are stored in conditioned air you should habe setup issues plus they are easy to stack in the back of the closet.

Could you lay it out on your bunk during the day and throw it over something (table perhaps) at night? Or, if you get a full length UQ it could be part of your bedding.

Thanks for the replies. Laying out on the boat wouldn't be an option for me but it's a good idea. I have my synthetic quilts stored rolled and in a tote stored in my "mobile storage locker" aka a 2013 KIA.... I clean them before storing for the season. My folks live close by, I guess I could store them over there....That may be the best option.

    OK...Thanks again!

I need a storage shed badly. I have a couple of down sleeping bags that I leave compressed because I don't have the room.

I have two old, for the time "high-quality", down-fill bags that date from the 1970's. They both spent their lives fully stuffed in their original sacks, sometimes for years on end, before the last couple of years when I finally found space to hang them in a spare bedroom. I can't tell that they suffered any problems by this "neglect".
Full loft returned within a couple of hours.

My best find for loose storage was a yardsale stack of old linen pillowcases for a Kingsize bed. PERFECT for bags and TQ/UQ's... just poke a hole in the end hem and run a piece of cord around for a drawstring.
