    Lightbulb Underquilt Material Experiences!

    Hi All!

My REI flash sleeping pad has served me well with backpacking, but I think that it is time to make the switch to an underquilt. After looking at all of the amazing manufacturers out there I think I have settled on Underqround Quilts. Alas, but my task it not over! I need to decide on a material for the outer layer.

I have read their website about the differences between HD1.0 and the Membrane 10 fabric and understand it is a trade off between weight and durability, but I want to hear what people have to say about their experiences with the fabrics. Have you had any problems with the durability of Membrane 10 that it would make sense to stick with the more durable HD1.0 for the outer layer?

    Thanks for your replies!

I use the lightest fabrics available over the years. Nothing heavier than 0.9. Most of my under quilts & top quilts are 0.67 and two are 0.5. No durability issues what so ever after many years.

Only go for durability if you are camping with dogs, porcupines, small dragons, or in places with a lot of pointy, snagging underbrush (e.g. burn zones)

Leiavoia, I try to make sure that my campsites include at least one local dragon.

How durable do you have to go for large dragons?!

You need carbon fiber cloth for that. As a bonus, you can use the leftover scraps to make wicks for all of your little pop can alcohol stoves.

After damaging 2 underquilts I have a different view. The quilts in question were made from 0.67oz Argon, but that's a 10D fabric, too. Sure, I was stupid - I did carry the underquilts from venting them out in the garden to the house without their stuff sacks, and they touched a rose. Probably a 15D fabric would have been damaged as well. But I don't think the rips would have been quite as large. I was certainly shocked to see how easy the fabric gave way.

Overall, I'm not very hard on my gear. But **** happens, and in this case, I would take the slight weight penalty over the decreased robustness.
