Questions on NOT using larksheaded CL on gathered ends, namely Chameleons

Hi guys! So I watched a video by Derek from Ultimate Hang where he suggested an interesting tip. He said that you can try attaching the continuous loop on a gathered end differently than the usual larks head method. What you do is just pass it through and leave the two ends free which will allow the fabric to lay more uniformly. Maybe that’s not the best way to describe the benefits, but I hope you can follow me.

    So my questions are:
    Is there a noticeable difference?

Will this work with the Dutch Chameleon? (which is what I have)
Because I imagine that having a zippered top might not be compatible with this method, yes or no?

What kind of suspension gear and knots are compatible with this method?

It sounds interesting, but I don’t want to damage anything.

    Thanks guys for reading,
    Randy

I have done this but have not been able to tell a difference. Perhaps some more testing is needed?

I've done it...no discernable difference, but I like the theoretical advantages, not the least of which is a slightly longer effective length.

The only concern would be 'possibly' putting more load on the end channel stitching vs the larkshead method.

    Foxpoop, I know you right.
My hammock has a gathered ball, made by putting a small light weak cord through end channel and tie it up, I've seen Marty at WildernessLogics tie it several times and I'm not sure I could replicate his exact way.
And not all hammocks have a gathered ball.
I can put a loop from end of whoopie sling
Or a continuous loop around body of hammock just below gathered ball with a larkshead around fabric. When tight, larkshead grabs all the fabric and there is no stress on channel stitching.
HYOH--there are a million ways to hang.

I wouldn't do it on a hammock with sewn triangles at the ends like the chameleon or dream hammock. Those triangle force the hammock fabric together at the point of the triangle so not only would it now allow the end to spread out, it would likely rip the triangles.

I've done it with some of my hammocks. It seems to be a "Princess and the Pea" difference. I think I can feel a difference in where a ridge can form in the hammock, but that could also be changed every time you put the same hammock up with a very slightly different hang angle. Even with a ridgeline, if it's just a little tighter or looser, the lay will be a tiny bit different. But for whatever reason, I prefer the open loop method. The one thing it seems to be is tighten up ever so slightly on the edges of the hammock.
