I stayed at Chapel before I had a hammock, but there were several hammockers there at the time. The sites there are gorgeous, and have good trees and close water for filtering. Well-maintained (but still rustic) pit toilets, bear vaults and bear poles. Just a quick walk down to Chapel Rock, too.

An update for anyone planning a trip there. . .

-Potato Patch - for sure two sites are hammock friendly
-Trappers Lake - difficult to make the 15 ft. rule on any site

These are based on hanging one hammock. I was hiking with a ground dweller.

I stayed at Hurricane River instead of Au Sable East, but it looked like at least one of the sites was hammock friendly.

    What a beautiful place!

Try to get to chapel early. garb the closest site to the lake. Its awesome. plenty of trees to hang from and you can see the lake from there. I want to say site 5 or 4? maybe. Have fun! can't wait to go back there!

How did your trip work out with those sites? I will be doing Chapel Rock and Au Sable East, as well, and I would appreciate your insights!

Oh my! That was a few years ago already. There are plenty of sites to choose from at Chapel Rock. Au Sable had less options, but I was able to hang. There was only one of us with a hammock. If you have more than one person, Au Sable might be tricky. But I am a super picky hanger. I only hang on certain types of trees (never birch, etc). I wish I could remember more. Hope this helps. The real issue was that you have to set up within so many feet of your campsite's post. If it wasn't for that it would be no problem at all.

I've been up there a few times this winter and 12 Mile Beach is awesome for hammocking.

Thank you so much! It’s been tough having to make reservations blind. I’d rather stay somewhere like 12 Mile, but to squeeze this trip into my window, the logistics kind of have to be what they are. Thanks for getting back to me!
