    Hammock camping with dog

I believe I saw a thread about this topic before, I just cannot find it any more.

I was considering to take my dog with me on my next camping trip. Has anybody done that before, any experiences or suggestions?

When using the search feature of HF, the keyword needs to be at least 4 characters so you will have more success if you plug in search terms such as dogs, pets, puppies, cats, etc. There was an extensive thread going from 2015 to this summer from someone asking a similar question as yours found at This Link.

How any dog fares while hammock camping is highly individual to that dog and that dog's owner. The age, temperament, behavior, and training of the dog owner are all factors to consider to say nothing about the dog as well. I write this with tongue-in-cheek, but am also a bit serious. Plenty of dogs and owners are well suited to this activity and plenty of them are not. Mine are not - at this time, but I did give it a try and discovered I had to rethink a lot of my own assumptions as their owner.

I've taken my rat terrier on trips before. He sleeps in the hammock with me. Haven't had a chance to get the lab out on an overnight adventure yet. Working on getting her used to her backpack and a pup tent.
It's not about the destination but about the journey.

I have found searching on google and following the links back here is far more effective than the search function included with this site.

In fact, keeping a notepad with you and keeping a hand written list of all the URL's you might be interested in in the future would be far more efficient than the search function.

Might as well not be there at all, it keeps giving the false impression it will help you find something.

Heck, yea, take the dog! I do nearly every other weekend with my dog, Ben. These days if he cannot go then we go someplace else. You'll figure out a routine. He isn't just for lookin' at, he is for using!
I like refried beans. That's why I wanna try fried beans, because maybe they're just as good and we're just wasting time. You don't have to fry them again after all.

I have taken my dog on many occasions, if you go with a group, ask the leader of the group. there are several here in Indiana that take dogs, and the group loves them. Farmer Ron and his side kick Butters are a staple at our outings. both are very well behaved. well Butters is anyway....

My pup comes with most of the time. I made him his own sleeping bag (that he has only ever slept on top of...) that he carries in his pack along with his food and supplies. He is two different dogs between home and the trail. Rambunctious as all get out at home in the city and content and well behaved on trail. I guess kinda more like me :-)
    Cheers,

I always feel better with a dog to alert me in the night of a bear or other visitor. The dog sleeps under me.

I took my labrador retriever, Fletcher, with me on a backpacking trip to Grand Island in Michigan last month. It was the first time backpacking for either of us. Little more planning goes into taking the dog with you, but not much. Here's the trip report for our trip... https://www.hammockforums.net/forum/...-(August-2017)

Are you car camping or backpacking? Public campground with neighbors or no?

I take my Lab Sam with me. He does not sleep in a hammock. Very good at protecting me from any whoozels in the area.I take a doggie tent for him that he may or may not use. Up to him.
