Leaving your car at a State Park should be very safe, most of the State Parks I've been in usually lock their gates at night. Course if we picked a State Park to leave the vehicals plus then used it as the put in point and also if we paddle down the river and then stayed at another camp site which is also in the State Park.... there will be camp fees to pay. What I've seen though is $12 for a group camp site that covers 9 people (we'd divide that by the number of us camping). To me that's a pretty cheap price to pay to have your vehical in a protected parking space.

So if you're gonna be able to check this all out, post back and let us know what you find out.

kayaks for me are like hammocks, you're just not happy with just one!!!
Right now I've got 2 that I like to paddle and 2 more that fit my son or my husband. And both of them have discovered that they don't really like kayaking (which I wish they had figured out "before" I bought the kayaks!!) These boats now are only used when we do a scout trip for the boys.
Oh, and paddling is like riding a bike, once you figure out your balance point, you're good to go.

Let me rephrase my previous statements.

It is safe to paddle anywhere along the river. The tea colored water is beautiful. As Ms. TinaLouise stated, the State Park is an ultra safe place to camp and park overnight. If you are starting and finishing at the State Park there are no worries. There are areas outside the park where I won't leave my vehicle overnight. There are also areas along the AT such as Hwy 19 in TN or Elk Garden by Mount Rogers I won't leave a vehicle overnight even though hundreds of other people do each year. YMMV.

I don't know any of the people in the LumberRiver Canoe Club but I've read some of their postings on their site. Their trips sound extreamly well organized, they eat well and it seems one or two of them always turns their canoe over at some point in the float!!!

Is there any place up there that I can rent a canoe for the weekend?
I don't have one yet, but plan on buying one soon.
