Advice on removing pine resin off tarp...

    Hi folks,

Does anyone know a good trick for removing pine resin drops from a silpoly tarp?

I hung last night between some pine trees under heavy rain, and this morning when I got out not only was the tarp wet but also full small pine resin drops everywhere. I removed the excess with the blunt edge of my knife but then I had to pack the tarp in its stuff sack in order to make it out to civilization again. So I'm sure it's getting smeared all over.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thnx,
    R

I recently used denatured alcohol. It worked good, no ill effects that I can see.

Ive used peanut butter to clean pine tar off my outdoor gear before. Just a little goes a long way. Just work it into the tar and it will remove it. Spray/wash/rinse the peanut butter off after and you'll be good as new.

Resine solves in fat and oil. The second step is to get rid of the fat/oil. Soap will help.

Thank you all for the help,

I didn't get around to read about the peanut butter until much later. Sounds very clever. I did try the denatured alcohol recipe with a cotton ball. There must've been 20 or more stains from the pine resin on each panel of the tarp. I then soaked the whole tarp for about 30 minutes in mild detergent water. Then rinsed it by hand, and hung it out to dry, and the goo had mostly diluted and smeared. It looked much better than it was, but still not presentable, so I went back with the cotton ball and the denatured alcohol and removed the rest. The tarp looks a lot better now. I'm sure it will look "normal" after a few downpours.

I didn't realize the sh*t power these pines had in them. This wasn't like a broken branch that was oozing goo over one spot. It was more like bird droppings falling all over the tarp. I had camped in pine groves before and never had this problem. It must have been related to the heavy rain from last night. Well, another lesson learned.

    Thanks again everybody!

I have had my Thunderfly or Winterdream set up in my backyard for days at a time over the past couple of months. They both got covered in pollen and a fine mist of larch / pine pitch and a few bigger gobs of sap. I read most of the threads here about how to deal with the problem but tried something different that seemed to work. Time will tell if there are long-term consequences.

To begin, I pitched the tarp fairly taut. I added a capful of Sport-Wash to about a 1/2 gallon of warm water. First wet down a section of the tarp with a hose, then used a soft bristled brush to apply the Sport-Wash and scrub the pitch and other gunk off the tarp. Rinsed the section, then repeated the wet down / brush / rinse off process section by section until the whole tarp was done.

After drying, they both look brand new.

shichimi, your post is a little vague, are you using Isopropyl Alcohol also known as Rubbing Alcohol and if so, at what %, as it is available from 70% to 91%.
Or are you using Denatured Alcohol or last but not least, Jack Daniels..

I am using Ethanol (Drinking Alchohol) somewhere around 70-75% (I am diluting 90% Ethanol with plain water ).
And using this diluted alchohol as fuel for my trangia spirit burner as well.
Here in Russia it is hard to find because of our country drinking habbits ))

I’ve read that - especially for tree straps - people put the item in the freezer. Once it’s really, really cold, you can pop/scrap the sap right off. I haven’t had to try this yet. If it works, it’s a solution that doesn’t require applying additional chemicals to your tarp.
In order to see what few have seen, you must go where few have gone. And DO what few have done.
