Cool Hi, I am Michael, new to Hammock Camping

    Greetings!

I just came to this forum based on recommendations from friends. I will be doing my maiden voyage in Hammock Camping this weekend. I have been wanting to try it for a while now, my son and I got a primer via his Scout Troop but I thought I would be too larger to give it a try. After research I think I will be fine. I bought a basic setup using an Amazon gift card I had banked from last holiday season can't wait to give it a run!

A good friend of mine is lending me a Turtle Dog stand as my first experience will be in a place where I can't use trees.

    Hi and Welcome!
    Good luck on first hang.
Once you return, take a look at all the Shug videos CLICK THIS TONS of funny and informative hammock how-to videos, camping videos and such. Shug keeps us all very entertained....(juggling on ladders, riding his unicycle into his hammock, etc)
Most of the cottage hammock vendor sites, also have links showing their products in use.
And check out "The Ultimate Hang"....Great book on hanging.

Welcome from Maryland! The Turtle Dog stands are a great option when you can't hang from trees. Sounds like your friend is a good source of knowledge. That is nice to have someone close that can help you as you learn!

    Welcome to the forums!

We have Turtledog stands and use them when the trees don't cooperate at the site we hang.

Since you are borrowing TurtleDog stands a word of caution: You cannot just back out of the hammock to exit like you can when hung from trees. If you do, you'll tip the stands over and get dumped. Hang the hammock so that your thighs are level, then get out on the diagonal while holding lightly onto the toprail with you rear hand.

If the nighttime temps are under 70*, you'll need some some of bottom insulation, aka an underquilt.

Have fun, and learn from your first experience.

Hope your first hang works out for you.
