I hadn't seen these before until now. I might have to buy one of these. Would you trust its durability for a 6 night backpacking trip?

    re: Luci lights
These are really popular with the groups I hang with. Nearly everyone has one.
I had a EMRG first. I found that for camping the blink and red-blink modes were useless. Just an annoyance to click through to get to "OFF". It worked great on the lowest setting to give light under my tarp, and I got 5-6 hours on a "full" charge. This spring I noticed that it was fading after only an hour or so... contacted them and they sent me a standard one as a replacement. ...Great CS
The deal with it is to get it in full light as often as you can, and only turn it on as needed... not leave it on full-time as soon as it gets dark. Doing those, I'd say you were probably fine for a long hike. You can get an hour or so of light out of an hour or so charge.

Regarding the mini LED key chain light: I've got a couple that I keep on each of my hammocks that I got here for $1.50 http://www.simplylightdesigns.com/ca...products_id/78

I've always been a fan of the Luci inflatable light, but never liked the bulkiness of the regular sized one. I think in one of Shugs videos he used the mini luci, so I picked up one of those at REI for around $15.00. Used it on a 5 day trip last week and was very happy with how it performed. Only thing I didn't like was that the red led only blinks for emergencies. Packs down nice and small too!

MDave-- that's what I was talking about.
I know these were really designed for third-world lighting uses, but steady-on red light to preserve your night vision would be a primo feature for us campers

I think it should work for you providing you are able to recharge it. Have had mine for several years now and still works good. I think its a great compliment to using your headlamp around base camp.

Like 'Oldskewl' I too am very pleased, and satisfied, with my Black Diamond Lantern. Three different operational modes, variable light brightness, long lasting light, easily hung or stands upright, and certainly not that heavy that it should be dismissed simply because of weight differences when considering it's features as compared to some other small lights,...just a second man's perspective.

We should do a thing at the spring hang with this! 50 ping pong balls on amazon for $10 and those lights are about a $1 each in 10 packs. That would be a fun easy DIY that people could use that night!

I have one of these in my hammock and really like it.It stays inside on the ridgeline all the time. When you need light at night,it's there. If you take a stroll in the middle of the night, you can see it like a beacon in the dark.I think solar lights are nice but I left mine at home last trip and did not miss it.Headlamp and the nite-ize are all I need.

    Great idea.

Ping pong lantern for the win! I compared the lighting to the energy bottle lantern last night and the pong lantern puts off more light and is just so cool to look at. At 0.3 oz and $1 my gram shavin' ,penny pinchin', DIYin' senses are pinging!
