My friends will be carcamping in this case. They may be staying several days, vacationing & relaxing & hope to have a few extras, like electric hook ups, water, nice bath house, etc.
But they are looking in the vicinity of the two parks I mentioned above so as to have access to some near by people while there.

It's not a state park but, Hot Springs Campground NC is definitely a hammock friendly campground. (Check out the hang there next month)
The AT is there to hike on and the French Broad river is there to do some rafting if your into that. Plus, Rock Bottom offers a great burger & fries!

Mt. Mitchell State Park and the area around it is great, just remember 50 foot off the trail and 100 foot away from water, unless it is a marked campsite, and you can pretty much set up anywheres.

I'll echo some of the same. Jones Gap in SC is a wonderful state park that welcomes hammocks. I also use my hammock extensively in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park.

<------------- In fact, my profile picture was taken at Jones Gap!

I took a ride up to Pilot Mt State Park today. http://www.ncparks.gov/Visit/parks/pimo/directions.php
It was a 35 minute drive from my house... man I have no excuse not to get up there more often.
If a person wanted to be lazy, you could get in your car & be in the nearest town in 10 minutes or less to eat out.

I talked to two Rangers & another park employee about hammocks. They had no problems w/ them.
Even less so I would guess after we talked about Hammock Forums & how we encouraged using webbing rather than rope, & nails & such were not even in our vocabulary when it came to hanging hammocks or anything else on trees (unless someone chooses to do that own their own property).

I made several slow trips around the campground loop, took a few pictures, & made a few notes. Here's a link...

You'll notice I focused on sites on the outside of the loop today. They just seamed to offer a little more privacy... at least some did.

Has anyone tried the park at Lake Johnson in Raleigh? I know that it's not for overnight, but more of a place to just hang and hangout.

My sons boy scout troop just finished a campout at Lee state park where our entire troop (11 boys and three adults made the trip) were hanging from hammocks. Our scoutmaster talked with the rangers before hand, and they actually checked out the different group sites, and helped decide which one would be the best for a group of crazy hammock hangers.

Of course, since we go to the primitive group sites, we're usually in more secluded (read tree filled) areas, and given a lot more leeway than other groups probably get.

I've never been to Lake Johnson, but I heard it was a nice place. I'd be down with meeting up and hanging at by the lake.
