1.2 Robic or 1.6 Hyper D

Hello,

I am making plans for a new hammock but I am unsure about which fabric to use. I am looking to use the 1.2 Robic or the 1.6 Hyper D. I like the Robic for the weight savings but is it suitable for me at 200lbs?

I made one of my hammocks out of the Hyper D 1.6 and like the fabric. I haven't used the Robic 1.2. Here is the weight chart from Rip Stop. The Robic is listed at 250 Lbs.

I just finished a hammock for my son in hyper D 1.6, it feels fantastic, and has a great lay. I just raised this same question about the new one I want to make as well. At the 220 mark I'm curious of the same thing. I'm also nervous at my weight the Robic will have too much stretch. What is your DIY GE made of now?

If you are unsure, you can order samples from RSBTR. I did, and while I like the Robik, for me, nothing I have yet seen (or felt) beats 1.6 HyperD.

So soft to the touch and just a tiny bit of stretch. I will probably use Robik on a quilt or two but for a hammock I want 1.6 HyperD.

Trail Troll, my current hammock is made from a ripstop i purchased at a local fabric shop and I am not sure if it is 1.9 or 1.1.

I would rather not have the weight of the 1.6 HyperD since I want to go with an XL fabric but I am unsure of the weight limit of 1.2 Robic XL. I am 200lbs and the weight limit of 1.2 Robic is 250. Is that enough of a spread that I am not going to break through?

If in doubt go with 1.6 HyperD. I have used it many times and its one of my favorites. However I made one hammock in Robic1.2 not so long ago and its growing on my (positive). I doubt it is as robust as HyperD in the long run but it’s because it is thinner and lighter, we can’t get it all. (me 190lbs)
Going with the thinner fabrics is something we have to get use to, it’s a mind thing I am sure they will hold unless we push the limit.
So far i only have positive things to say about Robic 1.2

I started with a Robic 1.0 hammock and I loved it. It was crazy light and super comfy. The robic had very little stretch, but DID indeed have a bit of give that made it wonderful. It failed after a while and I replaced it with a HyperD 1.6. It, too is super comfy but it does have a little more stretch. I have made a Robic 1.2 now that it has been released, but I haven't yet been able to hang in it. It feels nice and I bet it will be firmer than the HyperD 1.6 because it's predecessor was, and now the gridstop is heavier than the old one. I just assume it has to be a little stiffer. I'm excited.

FWIW the weight difference between hammocks made with the two fabrics you have selected will be between 3 and 4 ounces.

If you like your hammocks on the compliant side and you don't mind the extra weight, the HyperD will work out well. (I was laying in my 1.6 HyperD hammock all afternoon today, and it is soft and comfortable for me at 175 lbs, without being overly stretchy).

If you prefer more supportive hammocks and are under 225 (or ideally under 200), go with the 1.2 ROBIC to van some support and shed some weight. (I recently replaced one of DIY 1.0 ROBIC hammocks with a DIY 1.2 ROBIC.)

For anyone 225 lbs and over, I would not personally recommend either of these fabrics; while they may hold your weight, I think there are more comfortable fabrics out there for hangers who are heavier than that.

PS: Have you considered Dutch's Hexon 1.6 instead or RBTR's fabrics?
