I have two big trees that are just too far apart. I put in one 6x6 between them and 15' away from each tree

Now I have two places to hang. I've had two people hanging from the one pole.

Your right on the money with 6x6x12 16' apart 4' deep.
Whether you use concrete or not is optional or more dictated by your soil structure
Use these on the post to hang the hammock from http://www.homedepot.com/p/Keeper-1-...9314/204820639
Tarps can be hung as usual

That be how I do it.

LuvmyBonnet, do you have a TSC near you. They have nice round cedar posts for fencing. Only question is how long do they sell them? Might be worth looking into.

Cheers and good luck with your build.

So I think I'm going with the 6x6x12's from Home Depot. Only question is how did you folks get them to your home? I'm wondering if I get a friend with a pick up will it be able to handle 12ft long and how did you secure it? I'm not looking to spend the $69 delivery fee for $70 worth of wood.

If your friend has a long bed PU ( 8ft bed ) then yes your friend could haul them. I would hesitate to transport them in a short bed PU ( 6.5 ft ). A trailer would be even better. Ratchet straps would be the best way to secure the load.

I've strapped 4"x6"x16' posts to the roof rack of my SUV before with the ends rat bed down to the bumpers. If you pad the rear edge of your cab you can angle posts obliquely in a pickup bed so that they overhang the cab. Where there's a will, there's a way, as long as you don't exceed weight capacities, working load limits, or other safety considerations. If you haul big loads of lumber in unorthodox fashion, buy them during off-hours and bring them home slowly and carefully. Don't try to drive with tie-down loads like that at rush hour...

I brought mine home in a 6ft bed pickup but I put them over the cab and down in the bed. I did not have to go through any overhead items and only needed to carry them about 5 miles.

Spent part of my youth building fences using wooden posts. If you want strength and solidarity: 1. Get below frost line. 2. Pack down the soil /cement around the post severely, working from the bottom up. If you fill the hole and then pack it down, the result will be a wobbly post. You do not want wobbly posts.
