That's because dyneema doesn't melt, it chars. From the 'Rope Users Manual' I linked..."While the term "melting" does not apply to this fiber, it does undergo extreme degradation in these temperatures, and they char."

If you had an amsteel prusik on a strap or another piece of amsteel--and if it slid or if the knot was loose and it was loaded with body weight--then yes you are right--it can char or turn black and severely weaken your suspension and should be discarded and replaced as soon as possible. You are right Gmcttr--I had this happen once when I failed to pre-tighten my knots before getting in hammock. I set up a Phantom Grapplers suspension in a hurry in the dark after a long day--and I failed to set it tight before getting in hammock.
I no longer use that type suspension---now my favorite is Kokomo suspension--it holds great--sometimes after a hang, the slip knot jams or is hard to release. I switched from 3.3 Kevlar straps to Dutch's blue dyneema straps in hopes of solving problem--and it's worked good the first few hangs---We will see...
I do not think there is a problem with soft shackles hooking to amsteel whoopie slings--unless there was some unforeseen movement of amsteel on amsteel after loading. Stuff happens, since we are human and make easy mistakes from time to time.

There are similar videos of people using a strip of para cord to saw through another piece of paracord.

But I can't recall anyone ever mentioning their suspension failing because of friction.

I went hard wear free about three years ago on my rigs using roughly the same set up and I have had no issues. Not to mention I am on the petite side of large.

I would like to see a pic of your seat belt sized tree straps with you larks head soft shackle around the spike.

You got me on the loop to loop larkshead, I was just lazy when describing
On the gathered end of my hammock, there is a sewn in fixed loop to which I've larks headed my continuos loop.

Then I attached the fixed loop on my Whoopies to the CL also with a larks head but flipping it over for it to look like a square knot.
(wether or not that is still considered a larks head I don't know)

I'm considering replacing the CL with a soft shackle as it whould be easier to remove the whoopies when wet.

Your setup is how I hang my hammocks, just different attachment at gathered ends (Hennessy).

Adjustable loop of whoopie goes through soft shackle, soft shackle attaches to tree strap through one or both end loops.

I've only run this for a few hangs so far, but it is going to be my permanent setup. No issues with chafing since, as mentioned before, there is no significant friction when adjusting your whoopies because there is no load on them.

I used TacBlade's improved soft shackle method to make my shackles.

I'm just getting started and had a hell of a time getting my whoopie sling to stay put around a toggle on the end of a 2" strap. I replaced the toggles with a set of soft shackles and while it takes a little bit longer to get them undone this seems to be a simple solution, basically what Evan posted pictures of. I bought yellow everything to help stave off forgetting things around trees / finding them on the ground in the dark so I guess as long as I keep an eye out for char / discoloration I should be good ja?

As previously mentioned in this thread, dot11, there is negligible friction on the soft shackles when you adjust your whoopie since it has to be unloaded to release the constrictor and make adjustments anyway.
