Sorry for reviving an old thread, but this is something that I was just looking into.

I ended up making loops with double fishermans knots on each end with a Dutchwear double hammock whoopie hook. Then, spread the two side-by-side hammocks apart with two spreader bars (females with two tips) from DutchWare, also. They usually only go with us car camping, so bringing the poles is not an issue. If the day comes we want to do this backpacking, I'd heard of doing something similar with hiking poles. I like the idea of bunk beds, but I wanted my kids to be able to get in and out by themselves and thought they would like to be next to each other. This also means they are free to annoy each other.

Now, I just need to figure out how to get them well-sheltered with a rain fly...

Does the problem of one person being one hammock and the other being empty cause an issue. I can see the occupied hammock swinging to the ground as soon as weight is added.

I just posted a method that is simple and inexpensive to make. Have a look at this thread. I think you might like it.

To answer your question, there is some see-saw effect, but it's not that severe. When my wife and I hang double, I still hang my hammock at it's normal "sitting" height and even when she's not in hers I'm still good. Structural ridgelines amplify the effect, but they cause the hammock to raise higher.

Dutch now makes two-hole whoopee hooks that are designed to do exactly this

This is my hair brained idea. Use a small fallen thin tree to lash to two trees. Use that as a anchor on one end. The outside hammock has to be close to the tree and the inside one a little farther out to keep the "log" tight against the trees. Requires extra cordage only...

This is for trees that are not in perfect alignment or distances. The third tree could be just about anywhere or any distance and this setup can still work.
