My wife and I are doing a tour of southern Utah later this month, and we're planning to spend a couple of days in Zion. I see that the East Rim trail allows "freecamping" (choose your own spot), and what I'm wondering is how viable is this area for hammocking? If there are hammock-friendly areas, about how far in from the East Rim trailhead would one have to hike to reach them?

Even though I live in Utah I have to admit its been awhile since I have been in Zions so I cannot give you a great answer. But you may try contacting the park or the department of natural resources, I attached links below. Hope that will somewhat help.

I did the west rim before, wildcat canyon and didn't have any troubles finding a spot. I think you'll be good
