How cold is "TOO COLD" to hang?

Just looking for a reality check. My gear is 3 season, the bag is rated to 30 degrees and my liner will add another 15 degrees of comfort. I'll be doing the AT NOBO in March of 2020 so in preparation I'll hang here in Rock Island, IL in all sorts of weather to get the feel of 'it all'. With the wind chill temps. can get to 15 or 20 below zero.

Common sense (for a seasoned hanger) would dictate - too cold! I don't have that yet

    Thanks,

This video showed me there's no such thing as "too cold".

No -40 is really bad and can get dangerous quickly if you aren't prepared. For me the joy of being outdoors ends around 10 degrees and below but I'm a southerner

My personal "best" low temp was 8 degrees this past winter with 0 degree quilts. I was very comfy with only a synthetic blend t shirt and long johns. My lowest temp in 20 degree (3 season) gear is around 25 degrees. Again very comfy and with proper layers I could have pushed into the teens. To find your comfort zones with your gear, you gotta get out there and find it. Back yard sleeping or local campgrounds or something to get a feel for your gear and how to handle both cold and heat. I often sleep in the back yard, especially in winter. I prefer cold crisp air over hot humid air. That's just my thing. So, yeah, get out there, use your gear and play with layers of clothing 'til you get it dialed in. Be warned though, once you get started down this road, you'll ALWAYS be tweaking your set up. lol It's a sickness. Enjoy your travels!!

That -40° still amazes me. I've been down to -5° and the wind was pretty steady. I thought the main material on my Osprey pack was literally going to "crack" it was so cold and stiff. I'll do it again but not something I really look forward to so much.

Sleeping is the easiest part. Getting up, fiddling with gear, cooking, etc. is the tough part. At a certain temp it's just cumbersome and downright painful to do even little tasks.

What kind of liner do you use in that 30° bag? I've used them in the past but were always tough for me to estimate how much they would help ahead of time.

I don't voluntarily camp when it's below 25F at night. I can't bring myself to put on frozen boots in the morning. My feet just can't get warm after that. Cold feet = cold me = not unless you pay me. Even then, you'd have to pay me well.

When people tell me...you can't camp out in a hammock when its cold.... I tell them I have slept in mine down to 9 degrees and I tell them about Shug's -40 hang and ask them just how low did they plan to go ?

    clearly not a hockey player!

that being said, I sleep so much better in the cold, but -40 isn't something I'd do casually, or often.

-40 is more when I take up my other hobby, reading in front of the fireplace in my den, lol

-10 to -20 is not awful tho
