WNC 8th Annual John Rock Hang July 21-23 2017

We had another great hang in the Enchanted Forest. Thanks to everybody.

This year was a little different. We only had a few rain sprinkles all weekend, which was a big surprise.

The Saturday chili dog dinner was fantastic as always, but it almost didn't happen. Five of the crew went to the grocery store for supplies Saturday afternoon and almost didn't get to come back due to a manhunt that shut down Pisgah Forest. The suspect is still at large as far as I know. I'll let others fill in the details and hopefully share some pictures, videos and stories. It was very strange leaving the parking lot this morning and not seeing another car or person until we got out of Pisgah.

Hopefully, the suspect will be captured soon with no further incident.

I can't wait to do it again next year. Look forward to seeing everyone soon.

Had a great time as usual. This was my fifth time at the JRH. Yes the big news of the hang had to be the shutdown of the Pisgah due to a manhunt. When I left at 7:30 this morning the swat team was combing the forest near the ranger station so we had to stop for a bit while they searched, then there was another checkpoint at the bottom of the hill by "The Hut" and they just ask if we were going home which we replied yes.

The hotdog roast was a great success although we did not know what time it would happen because we were at Bi Lo and not allowed to enter the forest for a bit. All worked out well. Thanks Kevin for making this hang happen again and thanks to all who made this hang a success. See you next year. Will add more to this report later.
    Straight out of Clayton.

Most physical hike: Grandfather Mountain, NC. Aug 13.

I don't need to make my pack lighter. I need to make my (_*_) lighter.

Great hang! Linda (aka "Hangar Queen") and I really appreciate all the wonderful hospitality y'all showed us.

I would say my first Hammock forums hang was great success, met a ton of outstanding folks good times, great hotdogs and fireinthebones chili!
Ones that may of not caught name to handle its Will I was the younger guy with the kabobs and bacon and eggs.
We did the normal John rock day hike into the cat gap to hook back around to hang site. Craziest thing was the whole manhunt situation. Pretty neat watching the officers responding to the call up on john rock 32xx feet up while eating your lunch. Haha
All in all learned about all different types of hammocks and tarp systems.
Might of been the first, sure won't be the last. Plan to attend more in the future!

Had a great time running around like a "rabbit" to chat with different folks. Only a few "pellets" of rain to be seen. Sometimes if you claim mind over matter, the weather will do what you want.

I had a great time with a bunch of great people.
Snwcmpr, thanks for the great smelling coffee and conversation
El Gordo and Hangar Queen, so glad that you were able to join us and that your tandem setup worked. Thanks Jlreevesiv for the pop tarts, entertainment and John Moses Browning level protection as well as Pappy Amos, Peetey and Tacoma96 for making the eventful hotdog run.
Wcannon32, we will have to chat more in the future and glad that your knee healed and you had a great first hang.
It was great to see Moonbear all the way from Fl, gqgeek81, Bush and Hickery again!
Phantom Grappler, did the dirty sock work as a toggle? You are a hoot man, great to have you there. As always it was good to hang with my Bonefire Brothers, Intimidator, Foxpoop, Detail man and Brother Bones himself.
Thank you foxpoop and Tacoma96 for making this happen, I believe a good time was had by all.

Titaniumpyro, yes the tightly rolled dirty sock can be a toggle. I posted trip comments on page 25 in other John Rock thread--ha another rookie mistake--I'm feeling younger every day.

I missed most of you (only over-nighted Thursday night) but enjoyed what time I did spend there! Great meeting everyone and hopefully I'll feel better next time to make it a longer trip.
