Enjoyed the Piney Woods . I thought dirty socks were only useful as floor decorations. Never too old to learn. Was really surprised at the amount of LEO's on the way out Saturday but learned why Sunday. Good times!

Finally caught the guy.

As we were preparing to get in the river at Westfeldt Park on Monday, a policeman stopped us to say that we could only go down river because of the manhunt. Seems like that guy was following me. Of course, I would never try to paddle up-river, anyway.
Once again, many thanks to Foxpoop, Tacoma96, and everyone else for a great hang.
There are two kinds of people in the world: those who say there are two kinds of people, and all the others.

Good hot dogs, great chili and coffee. “Interesting” beverages. Good to see old friends and new and always good to spend a few nights out in the woods.

I made a pit stop in Asheville at 12 Bones BBQ for lunch. The ribs are pretty amazing. Definitely recommended. Got to the hatchery Thursday and hiked up with PappyAmos and claimed a pair of trees. I did a little foraging for mushrooms while I was out there but didn’t find a whole lot. Lots of Reishi, some Sulphur shelf, and a single chanterelle.
We saw the runners Friday morning many of whom were in costume. I caught a bunch wearing bad tropical shirts and a floppy hat in a nod to Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas and another group dressed as shirtless construction workers, monkeys and a single giant banana which seemed to be a nod to characters out of a few old music videos from The Bloodhound Gang.
Later I did a solo hike out to John Rock which I missed last year. Along the way I heard some commotion in the blueberry bushes and saw a black something with two ears moving away. I’m pretty sure this was a pair of black bear cubs but I never got to see more than a momentary glimpse of black fur.
Out on the pluton you can see Pilot Mountain, Mt Hardy, Devil’s Courthouse, Black Balsam Knob, and of course Looking Glass Rock among others. This would be a great place to visit again in the fall.

Foxpoop had a Bug Bam mosquito grid with him to keep the bugs away. Many of us were not convinced it was doing anything as there seemed to be no bug to begin with. Intimidator was clearly not intimidating enough and was getting bit. Saturday afternoon a few storms passed and the temperature dropped a little. All the sudden I was getting bit too by something I couldn’t see. Maybe I just needed a few days of stink on me to attract the insects. I had a little repellant with me but never got around to trying it. Maybe that grid does something after all though . Since I got back, I’ve found tons of bites I didn’t realize I had out there.
Everyone seemed to be up early and breaking camp Sunday morning. The parking lot and the forest roads were a ghost town due to the manhunt going on. Oddly, not the first time a group hang in recent years has involved a search for a burglar.
The temperature was decent all things considered. The humidity made things a bit warmer than I’m used to in the mountains but it was a far cry from the 100 degrees Eastern NC was getting over the same period. I had a foam pad with me, but found I was completely comfortable all three nights without anything underneath. I suspect any sort of strong breeze would have given me CBS though.
I keep a temperature logger with me on trips. For anyone interested, the peak numbers I recorded are here:
Thursday Hi 82
Friday Low/Hi 64/80
Saturday Low/Hi 65/81
Sunday morning Low 64
I got itchy on the way home.
